Houston Rockets’ legend recalls failed trade that would have given franchise Michael Jordan
The 1984 NBA Draft is historic one featuring four Hall of Famers in the selections of Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton. It’s known as the draft that the Portland Trailblazers passed on Jordan to select Kentucky center Sam Bowie.
The rest? History.
The Chicago Bulls landed Jordan with the No. 3 overall pick as he went on to be the greatest player to play the game, leading the franchise to six NBA titles. Olajuwon led the Rockets to two NBA titles after being the No. 1 overall pick. But there was a very small chance the two could have teamed up in Houston.
A long standing rumor is that the Rockets offered up center Ralph Sampson and Clyde Drexler to the Trailblazers for the No. 2 overall pick. From there, the Rockets would have taken Olajuwon at No. 1 and Jordan at No. 2. It’s been a rumor that has been around for years but not many have spoken on it.
Until recently when Olajuwon sat down with Kevin Durant for a Boardroom video.
Hakeem Olajuwon finds out about the Michael Jordan trade rumor
In the Boardroom exclusive with Olajuwon, Durant brings up the rumor as he’s seeking to find out if it’s true or not.
“Is it true that it was a trade that would have sent Clyde [Drexler] to the Rockets for the second pick?” Durant asked Olajuwon.
“I heard that afterwards,” Olajuwon said with a laugh. “I didn’t know about that.”
“Oh my goodness. That would have been 10, 12 championships,” Durant replied with glee about the hypothetical trade. “Greatest team of all time.”
The rumor is still not verified and it seems like it was news to Olajuwon. But if it did happen, it would have changed the course of history in the NBA. The Rockets could have potentially had a dynasty and if the Bulls took Bowie at 3, they don’t get six titles.
But that’s all in the past now and it’s safe to say Bulls fans are happy with the results.
