OTL: Ravens Add Former DEN/LAC/DET OC Joe Lombardi
Jesse Minter’s tenure with the Baltimore Ravens now reaching two weeks, he’s all systems go when it comes to building out his staff. Today, I’m here to help bring you back up to speed on all the names we’ll be seeing at 1 Winning Drive soon.
On Tuesday morning, Jeff Zrebiec and others reported the hiring of former Broncos OC Joe Lombardi, who should serve as a more experienced ear for new OC Declan Doyle to rely on:
Former Broncos OC Joe Lombardi will be joining Jesse Minter’s staff with the Ravens, per @jeffzrebiec

I’ll get to the idea of experience later on, but there’s plenty of reason to be excited about Lombardi (and everyone that Minter’s bringing in, it seems):
Lombardi, who had been the Broncos offensive coordinator the past three seasons and worked with new Ravens OC Declan Doyle, was let go by Sean Payton last week. https://t.co/RMyykV5Yf9
— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) February 3, 2026
Lombardi has been an NFL offensive coordinator at three different spots: Detroit (2014-15), Chargers (2021-22) and Broncos (2023-25).
He worked on same staff with Declan Doyle for years in New Orleans and two years in Denver https://t.co/1fbv9bYi8s— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) February 3, 2026
My guy MD had the Lombardi hire right.
Made too much sense considering he coached with Doyle & they were both on Payton’s staff.
Now you have an experienced play caller to pair with Doyle and work together. A win-win for both sides.
I’d expect Curry to join next. #Ravens https://t.co/n33tL6QK8O

Joe Lombardi was pretty successful under the defensive-minded Brandon Staley in LA when he was OC.
2021:
5th in PF
4th in yards
Herbert threw for 5,014 yards
Both Mike Williams and Keenan Allen 1100+ yards2022:
13th in PF
9th in yards
Herbert threw for 4700

Ken McKusick does a great job summarizing everything on Lombardi below, but the keys in my eyes are his past success with great offensive minds, the synergy he’ll have with Doyle based on their time with Sean Payton, and the play calling experience he’ll bring to support Baltimore’s first-time OC.
Thoughts on another Offensive Coaching hire, Joe Lombardi, who spent 10 seasons as the QB coach for Drew Brees in New Orleans and is reported to be signing with the #Ravens as an Offensive Assistant to Declan Doyle.#Ravensflock @1057TheFan pic.twitter.com/wDgr2AQ3xp

In the afternoon, Minter and company really flexed their muscles by poaching former Pittsburgh RB Coach Eddie Faulkner:
After seven years with the Steelers, running backs coach Eddie Faulkner is expected to take the same job with the AFC North rival Ravens, per sources.
Faulkner molded Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell in Pittsburgh. Now, he’ll team up with Derrick Henry. pic.twitter.com/vpxu85S6RM
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) February 3, 2026
The word around town is that Steelers fans are extremely frustrated by this loss – Need I say more? Maybe not, but Mike DeFabo offers a bit more insight into just how highly Pittsburgh brass viewed Faulkner:
Eddie Faulkner was one of the most well-respected position coaches on the Steelers’ staff last year.
There was a reason they made him interim OC a couple years ago after Canada’s firing. Guys listened to him and wanted to play for him. https://t.co/hlw2ujpMPF
— Mike DeFabo (@MikeDeFabo) February 3, 2026
Meanwhile, Cole Jackson draws a connection that may have helped bring Faulkner in, while McKusick again pulls everything together nicely:
Of note, Eddie Faulkner was the TE, FB and ST Coordinator at NC State at the same time that Dwayne Ledford was their OL coach
Would imagine they’re quite tight and worked together on the NC state run game quite closely

With that in mind, here’s how the staff looks now:

Incase you haven’t realized it yet, the Ravens are serious.
They continue to build their coaching staff into an absolute powerhouse.
No stone left unturned.

While Lamar Jackson’s QB Coach is likely the next big domino to fall, we can start piecing together what Declan Doyle’s offense may look like. And the most likely change, as some fans have previously outlined, as well, is the frequency of snaps under center:
The Bears had the second most under center dropbacks in the NFL last year. Over the last three years, Lamar has 164 dropbacks from under center and has completed 109 of 150 for 1,334 yards with 16 TDs to one INT. His 134.1 passer rating is the best in the NFL over that span. https://t.co/2SqqPrIC3R

Team under center pass attempts (excluding low red zone) With Ben Johnson as a play caller:
2025 Bears 2nd most
2024 Lions most
2023 Lions 2nd most
2022 Lions 3rd mostDoyle has also spent more time with Sean Payton. Not something Payton has done a ton with Bo Nix. Doyle was in… https://t.co/ye3cpcXsat

One of the bigger questions I have, though Lombardi’s hiring does help calm my concern, is the overall lack of experience across the staff. While we’ve heard a lot about the experience that assistants are bringing, Minter and Doyle will have to lean on past exposure more than hands-on experience.
Experience comes in many forms and Declan Doyle has learned from some of the NFL’s best: pic.twitter.com/zwNsJ7QXgi

And although I share the excitement most have about this “super staff” that Baltimore is putting together, I want to warn fans about getting carried away.
No gimmicks if we don’t troll, I see one loss https://t.co/aFbLZUEeBj

Just last year, we raved about how good the Ravens’ roster appeared before the ball was snapped. PFF may list Baltimore as a likely bounce back candidate (and again, I agree), the team still has a number of personnel decisions to make:
Ideally the ravens walk out of this offseason in fantasy world with:
X Wr
Depth receiving te (assuming both walk)
Two athletic guards that can pass pro
Pass rushing 3 tech that’s mid enough at run d to not get taken off field
3 down edge rusher
DPR edge
Coverage specialist LB…— Yuri (@Yuri_Ravens) February 3, 2026
If I’m EDC, I’m doing everything I can, within reason, to acquire one of these players this offseason:
All-In:
• Maxx Crosby
• Josh Hines-AllenAggressive:
• Reuben Bain Jr.
• David BaileyMost Likely:
• Trey Hendrickson
• Khalil Mack—

I hope the trenches are a priority going into FA and draft. They have to aggressively attack and address the trenches.
DEs I like no order:
Hendrickson
Mack
Riddick
Phillips
Jones
Chassion
Oweh(I know).
OGs:
Bitonio (day 2/3 rookie OG can develop)
Teller
Vera-Tucker…— 8 Way

All that to say, if media hype wins Super Bowls, Jesse Minter has the Ravens are set up well:
The jury is still out on great hire/bad hire. We haven’t even had a practice yet.
But maaaaan, it’s pretty clear that a plan is in place and the Ravens are still a coveted destination. https://t.co/XWblE9rXlJ

Short list of coaching hires that intrigue me the most:
-Mike McDaniel (LAC OC)
-Jim Leonard (BUF DC)
-Christian Parker (DAL DC)
-Klint Kubiak (LV HC)
-BAL staff as a whole— Derrick (@Steelers_DB) February 2, 2026
Imagine we were sitting here going into the season with:
HC – Harbaugh
OC – Nagy
DC – OrrNow compare that to:
HC – Minter
OC – Doyle
DC – WeaverSteve Bisciotti, I owe you a beer. #RavensFlock

“I was a big fan of that hire. You know I wanted the Ravens to go defense to be honest… I think bringing in a defensive coach to kind of restore that mentality is going to be important” @minakimes on why she likes Jesse Minter in Baltimore. pic.twitter.com/XmzdPz7aRZ
