Chicago Cubs: Michael Busch predicted to become 10th player in franchise history to accomplish this feat
The Chicago Cubs have accumulated some great young homegrown talent to form the foundation of their 2026 MLB roster. Indeed, looking all over the diamond, All-Star caliber players can be found that came up within Chicago’s farm system.
A few others started their careers elsewhere, but found more success playing in a Cubs uniform. One of these is first baseman Michael Busch, who burst onto the scene last year by mashing 34 home runs, besting his previous career-high of 21.
Busch has, understandably, emerged as Chicago’s everyday first baseman, and ESPN thinks he may do something in 2026 that no Cubs first baseman has done in over 20 years.
ESPN predicts Chicago Cubs first baseman Michael Busch will hit 40+ home runs
In their recent article in which they gave a realistic bold prediction for each Major League club, ESPN predicted that Busch will take an even bigger step in his power production and hit over 40 home runs in 2026:
“This is a little surprising given Wrigley Field has historically been a great home run park, but only nine Cubs players have hit 40 home runs in a season (for a total of 19 times, including seven from Sammy Sosa and five from Ernie Banks). The only first baseman to do it was Derrek Lee with 46 in 2005. Michael Busch joins the club with 41 home runs and has the first 150 OPS+ by a Cubs hitter since Anthony Rizzo in 2014.”
If Busch is able to mash 40 home runs, he would become just the first first baseman to do so for the Cubs in over 20 years. He would also become just the 10th player in franchise history to hit that many.
Not only is Derek Lee the only first baseman in Cubs history to hit 40+ home runs in a season, he is also the last player at any position to do it with the franchise.
Busch could really cement himself in Cubs lore by fulfilling this prophecy.
