Chicago White Sox release 4 players ahead of Spring Training game vs Los Angeles Angels

Chicago White Sox hat

The Chicago White Sox are getting closer to Opening Day, as it is less than a week away. As a result, the roster is beginning to shrink as the front office makes the final decisions on which 26 players will be on the big league roster. Cuts continue to happen, but we have seen four players be outright released and become free agents. Let’s take a closer look at the news and discuss what this means for the White Sox going forward.

The Chicago White Sox released four players, bringing their roster down to 36 players in Spring Training camp

The White Sox announced that prior to Thursday’s Spring Training game against the Los Angeles Angels, they have released four players: Lucas Sims, Austin Voth, Ryan Borucki, and LaMonte Wade Jr. All four players were outright released, meaning they are free to sign with any team ahead of the 2026 season. Chicago is now down to 36 players on their roster, which is broken down to:

  • 17 pitchers
  • four catchers
  • seven infielders
  • eight outfielders

Players released breakdown

Sims looked sharp in Spring Training as he threw five scoreless innings with just three hits allowed over five appearances. The right-handed reliever will likely receive another option in the bigs by another team looking to get a quality bullpen arm. He struggled in 2025 with the Washington Nationals as he pitched to a 13.86 ERA in 12.1 innings over 18 appearances. Voth pitched in 2025 with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He made one appearance for the White Sox in Spring Training, so there is not much to go off of this year.

Borucki was the only left-handed pitcher released in this quartet, which makes sense. The White Sox have a few southpaw relievers expected to break camp, so they do not have that same need as other teams. Borucki showcased his skills this spring as he pitched five scoreless innings with just one walk and two hits allowed. Wade Jr is the singular hitter who was released today. He had a strong showing in Spring Training as he played in 14 games and across 45 plate appearances had a .794 OPS with one homer, six RBI, eight runs scored, and a pair of steals without being caught. With Munetaka Murakami projected to play first base, the team likely did not want a primary first base option off the bench and rather go with the youth on their roster.

It will be interesting to see which players wind up making Chicago’s Opening Day roster.
