NFL Rumors: Potential All-Pro left tackle option available for Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears have some big needs to fill here in the 2026 offseason and among them is left tackle. For the second-straight offseason, the Bears have a need at left tackle after second-round pick Ozzy Trapilo suffered a ruptured patellar tendon that will keep him out most of if not all the 2026 season.
Chicago does have Theo Benedet and they could bring back Braxton Jones. They could also look at the draft as well. But as free agency begins, some news out from a league insider potentially opens the door for a big time splash from the Bears.
Could Trent Williams be in play for Chicago Bears?
Just as the legal tampering period was set to begin, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the San Francisco 49ers “are now said to be open to trading Pro Bowl LT Trent Williams, sources say, if the situation doesn’t get resolved.”
Rapoport mentioned that a resolution has not been easy so far. Williams is due $32 million in salary and has a $38 million cap hit for the upcoming season.

Now, it’s a big cap number for a team like the Bears to take on. However, it would be an immediate solution at left tackle for the next two years or so. That depends on how long Williams wants to play. He’s set to be 38 when the season begins but is still playing at a high level as one of the best left tackles in football.
It would be a steep price to pay for the Bears including the asset they would have to give up. It would be a big “Fireworks show” signing as Bleacher Report’s Brandon Thorn pointed out.
This situation still is in flux but as we know, things can move quickly. And it’s a story to keep an eye on moving forward.
