Ravens Reputation Sullied to the Maxx

In 2019 Eric DeCosta was named the Sporting News NFL Executive of the Year. There is no honor more prestigious for a league executive – an award voted on exclusively by NFL front-office personnel and personnel decision-makers. It represents ultimate respect, and it happened when DeCosta was just in his first season as the Ravens Executive Vice President and GM. To put that in perspective, it’s like a rookie player winning NFL MVP.

Fast forward to the present, and today DeCosta is battling to save his reputation. Trust built over years with other GM’s and player agents has been tarnished. That dark cloud then drifts towards players across the league, ultimately settling over the Baltimore Ravens franchise. At least that’s how it seems when listening to talking heads across the nation; while taking the pulse of pundits connected to the NFL voicing concerns via X.

Yesterday the level of angst directed towards DeCosta, and the Ravens was dialed up a few more notches after Maxx Crosby’s trade experiences with Baltimore dropped on his podcast, The Rush.

The portion of this episode of The Rush as it relates to the trade with the Ravens that was never completed can be bulletized as follows:

  • Crosby was flown to DC, not Baltimore, and then had a 2-hour commute to Ravens HQ, presumably slowed by traffic
  • He arrived on a Monday, dined and chilled with his wife, although there was a disturbance outside his hotel where a murder was allegedly committed. Welcome to Baltimore.
  • The next day (Tuesday) he arrived at The Castle and chopped it up with some players and coaches.
  • Later he had an MRI and other medical tests which according to Maxx took a long time.
  • During the process, DeCosta never met with Crosby, which took Maxx by surprise because “the GM” is the one who made the deal. “Where is Eric…I didn’t see him one time, for five hours”.
  • He wanted to see Jesse Minter, a defensive-minded head coach, but didn’t meet him until the end of the day.
  • Finally meets Minter, dapped him up but could see the energy was off; saw EDC standing nearby in the hallway.
  • Eventually they sit Maxx down (presumably with DeCosta). They shared their concerns about Crosby’s knee but continued to express their desire to have him on the team but qualified that by saying they needed more medical opinions.
  • Five minutes before he was told that the deal was off, the Ravens assured him that the trade would happen.

We all know that the trade was squashed by DeCosta and it’s easy to understand why. The Ravens couldn’t wrap their minds around a $30M/year player and two first-round draft picks for a player who has a limited shelf-life according to the team’s doctors.

But the ultimate outcome isn’t the problem. It’s the way they got there.

If we take Crosby’s story as gospel, it represents a big stain on the Ravens reputation. Fans across the NFL are viciously trashing the Ravens organization via social media and the depth of outrage will eventually affect how some of the Ravens’ own fans view the franchise.

Silence from DeCosta will only serve to exasperate the problem. Crosby shared his side. It’s time for DeCosta to share his. I get that he met with the media once on this topic. Once isn’t enough. He needs to provide a Ravens perspective for the benefit of all Ravens fans but more importantly for RavensFlock.

If the Ravens go mute on the topic, it may be interpreted, accurately or not, as an admission of guilt. And that will only fracture relationships with other GMs and agents. And all things being equal, it will give players pause when considering the Ravens as a place of employment.

Much has happened on DeCosta’s watch since that first season in 2019. Who knows how the balance of this 8th season as GM will go for DeCosta?

But it’s safe to say that a vote from his peers for Exec of the Year is certainly not in the cards anytime soon.
