Steelers think they got a ‘steal’ from Chicago Bears in free agency
The Chicago Bears made a bold move in free agency by letting four safeties walk last week.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson (Buffalo Bills), Jaquan Brisker (Pittsburgh Steelers), Kevin Byard III (New England Patriots), and Jonathan Owens (Indianapolis Colts) are with new teams. (Nashon Wright, another key member of the 2025 secondary, signed with the New York Jets.)
The Bears did add help at safety, signing former Seattle Seahawks safety Coby Bryant.
Brisker, a second-round pick by the Bears in 2022, signed a one-year deal with the Steelers worth $5.5 million.
During an episode of “Take The North” podcast with hosts Mark Grote and Dan Wiederer, Grote said the Steelers believe they got the “steal” of free agency by signing Brisker.
“I was on, as a matter of fact, I was on Pittsburgh radio last week, the pony show, Andrew Fillipponi, and what, you know what they’re saying there. It’s the steal of free agency,” Grote said. They’re calling the steal of free agency to get Jaquan Brisker.
“And of course, they’re biased, because he played at Penn State. He’s from Pennsylvania. So some of that might be the bias coming out, but they’ve paid enough attention to know that Jaquan Brisker is a pretty good product.
Brisker entered 2025 needing to show the Bears a lot to earn a new contract. He has a history of injury and concussions, and only played five games in 2024. The safety played in all 17 games of the regular season, recording 93 tackles, one sack, and one interception.
The Chicago Bears couldn’t make a long-term deal

Wiederer thinks Brisker’s injury history played a role in no team giving Brisker a long-term deal in free agency. He’ll have more work to do for Pittsburgh to earn a better deal in 2026.
Even if the Steelers were willing to make a deal to land Brisker with tremendous upside, the Bears weren’t going to take a risk this offseason.
“Did it surprise me?” Wiederer said of the Bears moving on from Brisker. “It didn’t, because I do think that in this league, when you have concussion history, nobody is looking to sign a long-term deal… For the foreseeable future, it may be a bunch of one-year deals for Jaquan as he just tried to kind of keep his career going in that direction.
“We’ll see what the rewards are up the road if he can continue playing the way he did last year, but it’s an interesting one for sure. And as for the Bears bringing him back, it just felt like this was the direction things were going.”
The Bears will have to add a couple more safeties to the roster this offseason. It remains to be seen if Chicago can find another player to match Brisker’s energy, but the team needs to find a player they can trust will keep themselves on the field.
Brisker took risks with his style of play. It’ll be interesting to see how he plays for Pittsburgh.
