11-year pro with Chicago Cubs reunites with former executives in Detroit
From 2014 through 2024, Chicago Cubs fans grew accustomed to seeing Kyle Hendricks factor into the starting rotation. Nicknamed “The Professor,” the crafty right-hander built a lengthy career on precision and command, spending 11 seasons anchoring Chicago’s rotation. In 2025, Hendricks spent the lone season of his career outside the organization, making 31 starts for the Los Angeles Angels.
After announcing his retirement this past offseason, Hendricks is already set to return to baseball in a new role. Just one month into the regular season, he is joining the front office of the Detroit Tigers, where he will reunite with a pair of executives who overlapped with him during his time in Chicago.

From 2012 to 2019, Scott Harris worked his way up through the Chicago Cubs front office, eventually earning the title of assistant general manager before departing the organization. After a brief stint as general manager of the San Francisco Giants, he was hired as president of baseball operations for the Detroit Tigers in 2022.
Meanwhile, Jeff Greenberg spent a decade with the Cubs organization from 2011 through 2021, also climbing the ladder to assistant general manager. Following a short stop in the NHL, Greenberg joined the Tigers as their general manager in 2023.
Now, both Harris and Greenberg are reuniting with Hendricks in the Tigers organization. Hendricks is joining Detroit as a special assistant focused on pitching development, giving the longtime Cubs veteran an opportunity to transition into the next chapter of his baseball career alongside two executives who helped shape Chicago’s World Series winning 2016 team.
