Concern grows for Sophie Cunningham after major announcement

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham established herself as a key piece for the Indiana Fever last season.

The 6-foot-1 guard joined the team ahead of the 2025 campaign via a multi-team trade from the Phoenix Mercury. She immediately emerged as a key contributor on both sides of the ball. Cunningham also served as a vocal leader for the squad both on and off the floor.

Unfortunately, Cunningham’s first year with the Fever came to an end after she suffered a season-ending knee injury. She made a total of 30 appearances before tearing the MCL in her right knee in August.

Cunningham produced averages of 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.7 triples in 25.2 minutes per game.

Indiana Fever fans react to Sophie Cunningham’s new job

Cunningham announced a major career update on Tuesday. She took to Instagram to reveal her new partnership with USA Network.

Cunningham has signed up as a guest contributor for USA Network’s coverage of the 2026 WNBA season.

While most fans greeted the news with excitement, more than a few others expressed concern about Cunningham taking on a new gig on top of her day job as a professional basketball player.

“Wait, you’re still playing right?!” a comment on Instagram read.

“This is a side gig, right? Because you’ll be playing with the Fever all season?!?!?” another said.

“i’m so confused… 😭 does this mean you’re not playing this season or are you able to do both?” asked a fan.

“Please tell me, for my mental health, that you’re still playing. ðŸ™ðŸ»” a reaction read.

“Um…first & foremost congratulations!! But like…..you still playing orrrrr?” said another.

“@sophie_cham does this mean you’re not playing this year?!?! So hoping you’re back as a Fever girl!!!! ðŸ™ðŸ¤ž” a supporter wrote.

For what it’s worth, there has been no indication from Cunningham that her new role as a broadcaster will interfere with her primary job as a player. It is worth noting, however, that in addition to this new gig, Cunningham hosts the “Show Me Something” podcast, which releases new episodes weekly.

There is also a lot of uncertainty surrounding Cunningham’s future with the Fever. She is currently an unrestricted free agent. The Fever will be able to negotiate a new deal starting Wednesday, but until she signs a new contract, there is no guarantee that Cunningham will be back in Indiana in 2026.
