Former Chicago White Sox All-Star tests positive for PEDs during World Baseball Classic
The Chicago White Sox have seen many players play for the organization throughout the years. There have been some exciting players who have had a cup of coffee with the team, but others who have spent a lot of time with Chicago. One of the more intriguing players post-World Series victory has been in the news, so let’s take a closer look at what happened.
Alexei Ramirez tested positive for PED usage during the 2026 World Baseball Classic
Former White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez is in the news for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The International Testing Agency stated on Wednesday that he tested positive for “metabolites of mesterolone, metandienone, oxandrolone and stanozolol.” The ITA stated that they notified Ramirez of this result during the tournament, as he played for Team Cuba, but they did not advance out of the pool phase of the tournament.
The agency that tested the sample is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. They claimed the steroids are “associated with promoting rapid muscle growth, increased strength and enhanced physical performance.” As a result of this, Ramirez received a provisional ban from the sport.
Ramirez set the record as the oldest player to participate in the World Baseball Classic at 44 years old. Ramirez participated in the 2006 edition of the WBC, but made Team Cuba 20 years later. He played for Chicago from 2008-2016, and was a two-time Silver Slugger and 2014 All-Star. He has not played in MLB since 2016 and not play in any international league since playing in Mexico in 2018.
It appears that Ramirez is not going to be playing in any international tournaments, and he has not commented on the ITA ruling. During the World Baseball Classic, Ramirez would only have one plate appearance, striking out. It will be interesting to see if Ramirez’s name pops up or if this is the last chapter of his baseball story.
