Blackhawks could flinch on top trade target for one critical reason

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are loaded with assets heading into the NHL offseason. They have quite a bit of cap space, own the No. 4 overall pick in the NHL Draft and also possess three second-rounders. On top of that, the Blackhawks lay claim to the first-round draft choices in 2027.

As a result, Chicago is expected to be one of the more active teams in the league this summer. Not just in free agency, but also on the trade market.

There are a litany of potential targets that have been linked to the Blackhawks in recent weeks, but one of the more popular names is Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish.

Just 23 years old, McTavish had somewhat of a rough season with the Ducks, putting his future with the franchise in question. Some feel the former No. 3 overall selection could get dealt in the coming weeks, and Chicago seems like a natural destination.

But should the Blackhawks pull the trigger on McTavish?

McTavish was recently listed No. 4 on a trade big board by Chris Johnston of The Athletic, so he is certainly on the block.

But Tab Bamford of Bleacher Nation wonders if Chicago might hesitate to pull the trigger on McTavish due to one big reason.

“A name we’ve talked about frequently, Ducks center Mason McTavish, appears at No. 4 on Johnston’s list. I like the player, but Johnston points out that there are some questions about his skating that could potentially give the Blackhawks’ front office pause,” Bamford wrote.

Bamford added that there is understandably “intrigue” around McTavish, but Chicago already has a wing with less than desirable speed in Tyler Bertuzzi.

McTavish scored 17 goals while adding 24 assists this season, which was a step back from the 2024-25 campaign when he finished with 22 scores and 30 dimes.

The Swiss native remains a compelling talent because of his age and overall skillset, so the Blackhawks may want to check in on him regardless. But there will probably be more enticing targets available for Chicago, and Kyle Davidson will need to be careful in parting with significant assets for a player who might not fit.
