Blackhawks’ most ‘likely’ trade target doesn’t make much sense

Jeff Blashill, Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks find themselves in a pretty cushy position heading into the NHL offseason. They possess expansive cap room to sign free agents, and they also own a bevy of draft capital that they can use in trades.

Plus, the Blackhawks have a surplus of young defensemen they can use to sweeten the pot in a potential deal for a star player.

Chicago has missed the playoffs six years in a row, representing its longest drought since 1952, but things appear to be looking up in the Windy City, as the Blackhawks have shown improvement each of the last two seasons and have a brilliant opportunity to make some noise this summer.

We have already heard Chicago connected to numerous targets both in free agency and on the trade market, but will Kyle Davidson actually get aggressive this time?

It does seem like the Blackhawks are primed for some big moves, and most of all, they need to get Connor Bedard some help on the frontline. But who will they actually pursue?

Well, Greg Boysen of Blackhawk Up has floated a rather strange possibility: St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou.

Chicago Blackhawks linked to puzzling trade for Jordan Kyrou

Kyrou is widely viewed as a trade candidate heading into the offseason, and Boysen thinks Chicago could make a play for him.

“St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas has been a name in the rumor mill for months, and he’s 13th on [Frank] Seravalli’s list. He is a player that general manager Kyle Davidson should inquire about, but if he is on the trade block, many other teams will make offers. Thomas’ teammate, Jordan Kyrou, is second on the list and, as I’ve written about before, could be a better fit and a more likely target,” Boysen wrote.

While it’s hard to deny that Kyrou would be a terrific fit alongside of Bedard, the question must be asked: why in the world would the Blues trade Kyrou to their hated rivals?

This would be the near-equivalent of the St. Louis Cardinals trading a star player to the Chicago Cubs. It would never happen, and if the Blues even entertained the thought of sending Kyrou to the Blackhawks, you already know they would attempt to rake Chicago over the coals.

The chances of the Blackhawks actually acquiring Kyrou — who actually had a down year this season — are slim to none. There are plenty of other wingers Chicago can pursue in the coming weeks and months, and they wouldn’t cost the Blackhawks nearly as much.
