Bulls slapped with bad news all around in new NBA free agency report

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are heading into the NBA offseason with expansive cap space and are expected to be major players in free agency as a result. But will the Bulls actually be able to make any significant signings?

You would figure Chicago would do something, as it won just 31 games this past season and has posted just one winning campaign over the last decade. The Bulls are desperate, and with a new top executive in Bryson Graham, they could get aggressive this summer.

Whether or not it would be in Chicago’s best interest to splurge in this market, however, is another story.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps just published an article revealing some free-agent intel, and multiple expected Bulls targets might already be out of their range.

Chicago has been tabbed as a destination for both Jalen Duren and Austin Reaves, but their price tags look extravagant. Then there is Mitchell Robinson, a cheaper option who might end up staying with the New York Knicks.

The Bulls need a lot of things going into the summer, but they may have to rely on the NBA Draft and trades to fill those holes.

Bontemps has revealed that Duren is expected to land a contract worth $40 million annually, which is a heck of a lot for a big man with a limited offensive game and offers very little in terms of rim protection. Not only that, but Duren struggled mightily in the playoffs for the Detroit Pistons this year.

Reaves, meanwhile, is also expected to bag over $40 million a year. For a player who faded quite a bit after a tremendous first couple of months of the season, that is an abundant sum of cash, and signing Reaves to such a contract would hamstring Chicago for years to come.

Robinson would represent a terrific affordable option, but Bontemps has reported that the 28-year-old center will likely return to the Knicks, who will probably go well into the second apron next season.

Those are three prime targets the Bulls might not have a chance of landing this offseason. That is, of course, unless they want to break the bank, which is absolutely not a good idea for any of those names.
