Caitlin Clark addresses her shortcomings for Indiana Fever

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever got off the mark on Wednesday, recording their first win of the new WNBA season.

The Fever suffered defeat in their season-opener against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, 107-104. Clark and Co., however, bounced back on Wednesday with an 87-78 road victory against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Clark led the charge with a team-high 24 points, with four rebounds, nine assists, two steals and a block in 31 minutes of action. The two-time All-Star went 9-of-17 from the field but just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc.

On Saturday against the Wings, Clark shot 7-of-18 for 20 points. She went 2-of-9 from distance. Across two games, the 6-foot guard is knocking down 45.7% of her shots. Clark, however, has struggled from three-point territory, shooting just 18.8% on 16 attempts.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark gets honest on shooting woes

Clark spoke honestly about her inefficiency from deep following Wednesday’s win in L.A. She admitted that her outside shooting has left a lot to be desired thus far.

“Yeah, well, obviously, I’ve only made one three tonight,” Clark told reporters. “But I haven’t let that affect me.

“I obviously haven’t shot the ball as well as I would have liked the first two games, but my shot feels great, and I feel like it’s right there. I haven’t let that bother my mind through these first two games.”

Clark clearly isn’t letting it get to her. Instead, she’s focusing on the things that she can control, which at this point, is her role as the Fever’s floor general.

“The best thing I can do for this team is playmake,” she continued. “At the end of the day, I can score the ball, I can make threes, but what I can do best for this team is make plays for my teammates, and I know that.

“Getting my feet in the paint and spraying it to my teammates — I think that’s what I’m trying to focus on the most. That takes my mind away from feeling like I need to make every shot.

“When I get my feet in the paint, good things happen. I can get to the free-throw line. I can finish well around the rim.”

That’s exactly what Clark did against the Sparks, and she will be looking to carry over that momentum to their next game. The Fever are back in action on Friday in a home matchup against the Washington Mystics.

Clark is averaging 22.0 points on 45.7% shooting in two games. Her three-point shot will fall eventually, and it’s only a matter of time before she starts going on one of her offensive onslaughts.
