Chicago Bears: Caleb Williams will make or break team’s 2026 NFL season

Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears, for the first time in many years, won the NFC North title in 2025. They were the second seed in the NFL Playoffs with an 11-6 record, and knocked the hated Green Bay Packers out of the postseason. Unfortunately, their season ended a week later with a Divisional Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

There have been some significant changes to the Bears’ roster this off-season, as there is every year with players coming and going in free agency. Still, the expectation is that Chicago will take another step forward in 2026 and, hopefully, compete for a Super Bowl.

While many things need to go right in order for this to happen, it starts and ends with quarterback Caleb Williams.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has been good, but needs to keep improving

Williams did not disappoint as a rookie in 2024, passing for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, just six interceptions, and an 87.8 passer rating. He seemed to improve in 2025 under new head coach Ben Johnson, throwing for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 90.1.

However, his completion percentage dropped from 62.5% as a rookie to 58.1% last year.

To put it plainly, that low level of pass completion percentage cannot continue if Chicago is to take the next step. Bleacher Report recently wrote, “Williams still posted a sub-60 completion percentage and a 90.1 passer rating, which is far from stardom range. Now, he’s lost a key veteran receiver as well as his Pro Bowl center.

“Progress from risers Colston Loveland, Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III should ease that burden, as should the acquisition of Bradbury, but this offense remains slightly unsettled for now.”

Williams went through some obvious growing pains in 2025 as he adjusted to Johnson’s system. Despite these, he still took care of the football and the Bears offense was good enough to win them 11 games.

But now the rest of the NFL has a full season worth of tape on Williams and how he plays in this offense. They will adjust, and Williams must stay one step ahead of them if the Bears are going to take a step themselves in 2026.
