Chicago Bears prefer Tyrique Stevenson to rookie in bizarre post-draft twist
The Chicago Bears didn’t draft as many Week 1 guaranteed starters in the 2026 NFL Draft as much as they added depth for competition at multiple spots on the offense and defense this offseason.

That’s the sign of a good roster, as the Bears had limited positions that would be open for Week 1 competition, with the defensive line being a notable exception.
Chicago general manager Ryan Poles believes that having an elite secondary will keep opponents receivers from getting open fast, allowing the pass-rush more time to get to the passer.
With Jaylon Johnson, Coby Bryant, Kyler Gordon and Dillon Thieneman in the secondary, the Bears should have one of the better units in the upcoming season.
The Bears added to cornerback by taking Malik Muhammad out of Texas in the fourth round of the draft. Ben Solak of ESPN believes that pick will put Tyrique Stevenson on the hot seat this season. Steven struggled last season, allowing 9.8 yards per target, third worst among league cornerbacks.
There is a catch for the Bears, Solak believes the team wants to start Stevenson over Muhammad this season, hoping his tape would allow the team to recoup a compensatory pick when he signs with another team in free agency next year.

“The Bears would much prefer Stevenson to play (and excel) over Muhammad,” Solak wrote. ‘That’d mean Stevenson could walk in free agency, sign a huge deal elsewhere and give Chicago a nice compensatory pick in return.
“But if Muhammad shines in camp, the Bears might struggle to keep him off the field while Stevenson gets targeted opposite Johnson.”
The Bears might not afford to keep Stevenson on the field if Muhammad comes in and outright earns the job as a rookie, even if it costs a draft pick. Chicago has given Stevenson more than a fair share of chances. He rewarded them with some game-winning plays, but those have been few and far between the mistakes.
