Chicago Bears ranked as a bottom 10 defense after the NFL Draft
The Chicago Bears made a lot of changes to their team throughout the offseason. The offense was able to do well last year, but the biggest question was regarding the defense. After having one of the worst statistical defenses in the sport, changes were certainly needed. However, they were able to improve on it through free agency and the draft. Let’s take a look at what one outlet ranks the defense and what it means for Chicago right now.
Bleacher Report ranks the Chicago Bears defense in the bottom 10

Chicago made a lot of changes on the defensive side of the football throughout the offseason. They finished the 2025 season as the 23rd-ranked defense with 24.4 points per game allowed. Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport curated a ranking of every defense in the NFL following the 2026 NFL Draft. Bears fans may want to look away as he had the team ranked 23rd, or the ninth-worst in football. Below is a snippet where he discussed Chicago:
“[The Bears] defense has issues again in 2026-at every level. Despite managing just 35 sacks as a team in 2025, the Bears did next to nothing to improve a pass-rush that consists of Montez Sweat and not much else. The team could still add a veteran like Joey Bosa, but getting after opposing quarterbacks is a problem right now.
“At linebacker, Tremaine Edmunds is gone, replaced by Devin Bush. Bush had easily the best season of his career in 2025 with the Cleveland Browns, but his NFL career has been, um, bumpy. One the back end, there are two new starters at safety in Coby Bryant and first-round rookie Dillon Thieneman. The Bears are stil relatively deep at cornerback, but the loss of Nahshon Wright in free agency was a blow.”
To understand where Davenport believes the team to be, below are the rankings of the 10 worst teams in the list:
- 32: Miami Dolphins
- 31: Arizona Cardinals
- 30: Washington Commanders
- 29: New York Jets
- 28: Cincinnati Bengals
- 27: Tennessee Titans
- 26: Dallas Cowboys
- 25: Las Vegas Raiders
- 24: Chicago Bears
- 23: Indianapolis Colts
What have the Bears done this offseason defensively?
Davenport brought up the fact the Bears did not improve much at getting an edge rusher. That is a major talking point for people discussing the Chicago defense right now, and rightfully so. However, he even pointed out that there could still be additions in free agency, but the Beare some additions. But first, let’s talk about the departures. They had 10 players leave as free agents on that side of the ball, which is listed below:
- Tremaine Edmunds
- Kevin Byard
- Jaquan Brisker
- Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
- Nahshon Wright
- Dominique Robinson
- Andrew Billings
- Chris Williams
- Joe Tryon
- Jonathan Owens
With that many departures, the front office also had to be aggressive to replenish and improve the defense. Below are the defensive additions via free agency and the NFL Draft:
- Coby Bryant
- Neville Gallimore
- Cam Lewis
- Kentavius Street
- James Lynch
- Jack Sanborn
- Dillon Thieneman
- Malik Muhammad
- Keyshaun Elliott
- Jordan Van den Berg
It will be interesting to see how defensive coordinator Dennis Allen does with these new players. Chicago’s offense is elite, so if the defense can improve, Super Bowl aspirations are going to be running wild in the Windy City.
