Chicago Bears react to major news involving Super Bowl-winning LB
Chicago Bears icon Ron Rivera enjoyed a solid football career.
He played for the California Golden Bears from 1980-1983 and earned the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year award in his last season. The linebacker also received the Pop Warner Trophy, which honors the most valuable senior on the West Coast.
His collegiate success translated to the NFL. The Bears drafted Rivera at No. 44 in the second round, and he started as a rotational linebacker and special teamer.
Rivera became the first American of Puerto Rican descent to win a Super Bowl. The 6-foot-3 defensive standout contributed to the franchise’s championship team in 1986.
Rivera spent his entire NFL career with Chicago before he retired in 1992. He later became a coach, taking on different roles with several teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers. Rivera filled the positions of defensive quality control coach, linebackers coach, defensive coordinator and head coach.

On May 5, Rivera was inducted into the Hispanic Football Hall of Fame. He joins Tom Fears, Tom Flores and Ted Hendricks, among others, as members of the inaugural 2026 class.
The Bears congratulated Rivera for the achievement on Instagram.
“Congrats to Ron Rivera on being inducted into the Hispanic Football Hall of Fame! 👏,” the Bears wrote on Monday.

The 64-year-old is a proven coach at the pro level. He won the NFL Coach of the Year award in 2013 and 2015. Rivera achieved his best run with Carolina from 2011 to 2019, amassing 76 wins.
His last stint in the NFL was from 2020 to 2023 as the head coach of the Washington Commanders. Rivera led the franchise to a 26-40 record and one postseason appearance.
He currently serves as the general manager of his alma mater’s football team. Rivera signed his contract with the University of California in March 2025, and his deal runs through 2028.
