Chicago Cubs: Alex Bregman opens up on team’s 8-game losing streak, “It starts with me”
The Chicago Cubs are desperate for solutions as they dropped their eighth straight game on Sunday. Despite lineup shuffling from manager Craig Counsell, the Cubs have either not had adequate pitching or have not put enough runs to win any of their games this week.
After losing the last two games of their series against their cross-town rival Chicago White Sox, the Cubs got swept at home by the Milwaukee Brewers, and then were swept again at home by the Houston Astros.
Obviously, losing streaks like these have coincided with multiple players going through slumps at the plate. One of them, Alex Bregman, believes he holds the key to Chicago turning it around.

On Sunday, Bregman was 1-4 with a strikeout. Over his last six games entering the series finale, the three-time All-Star is hitting just .208/.296/.208 with two RBI.
After signing a five-year $175 million contract this off-season, Bregman is performing below expectations. A year ago, he hit .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI. Thus far in 2026, he is hitting. 250/.336/.348 with four home runs and 16 RBI.
Following Chicago’s loss on Sunday, Bregman told the media, “We gotta do a better job still. It starts with me obviously, too many empty plate appearances. Gotta be better and execute better.”
While it is admirable that Bregman is owning up to his struggles, the fact of the matter is that he is not the only one going through it right now. As a veteran leader, he is setting the example for his younger teammates on how to respond to questions about the team’s struggles as a whole.
And while he does need to be better, others need to be as well. That being said, if he can get himself going at the plate, it could be a much-needed spark to Chicago’s offense.
