Chicago Cubs: Craig Counsell gives honest assessment of Pedro Ramirez 1st Major League start
Prior to their game on Friday, the Chicago Cubs placed Matt Shaw on the injured list and called up infielder Pedro Ramirez to take his place. Of course, Chicago lost that game and manager Craig Counsell promised some lineup changes on Saturday.
While those changes were, indeed, made, they did nothing to stimulate the offense. The Cubs lost again, and Ramirez was not in the starting lineup.
On Sunday, Counsell decided to give Ramirez his first career Major League start. He moved Gold Glove second baseman Nico Hoerner to shortstop and gave the struggling Dansby Swanson the day off. Ramirez was given the start at second and hit ninth in the batting order.

Unfortunately, the lineup changes on Sunday did not lead to a Cubs victory. Shota Imanaga gave up seven runs in six innings of work, and Chicago lost 8-5, bringing their losing streak up to eight games.
Ramirez was 1-3 on the day with a double, run scored, RBI, and a walk.
Afterwards, Counsell had high praise for the organization’s second overall prospect. “He came up in a number of big spots,” Counsell said. “(I’m) proud of Pedro. (He) had some big moments, came through in them in my eyes, and had a really nice game.”
It will be interesting to see if Ramirez’s performance on Sunday will lead to more playing time in the immediate future. Happ was recently given two consecutive games off, so it stands to reason Counsell may decide to do something similar with Swanson.
Truth be told, the Cubs have no shortage of struggling players, especially on the infield, and Ramirez could be used to give any one of them some prolonged time off.
