Chicago Cubs: Craig Counsell refuses to start 2 top prospects after call-ups
After losing their sixth-straight game on Friday night, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell said he was going to shake up the lineup. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a two-run home run on Friday, but otherwise has been mired in a slump that dates back to the second half of last year. Ian Happ has hit 10 home runs, but only has 20 RBI has he has struggled to hit with runners on base (as have the rest of the Cubs regulars).
Dansby Swanson, who has never hit as well as he did in Atlanta, is having his worst season at the plate, hitting .187.
Clearly, change was needed. Counsell has indeed made some changes for Saturday’s game, but perhaps not the ones fans were expecting or wanting.
Craig Counsell does not have Pedro Ramirez or Kevin Alcantara in the Chicago Cubs lineup
Prior to Friday’s game, the Cubs placed Matt Shaw on the injured list and called up infield prospect Pedro Ramirez, to replace him. On Saturday morning, it was reported that they had called up outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara. Both are considered Chicago’s top-two hitting prospects.
But they are not in the starting lineup on Saturday. Counsell has shaken the lineup up, but he is not starting their top-two minor league hitters.
The Cubs’ lineup for Saturday is as follows:
- Pete Crow-Armstrong
- Alex Bregman
- Michael Busch
- Nico Hoerner
- Michael Conforto
- Seiya Suzuki
- Moises Ballesteros
- Miguel Amaya
- Dansby Swanson
Hoerner has typically been batting lead-off, but is now hitting cleanup. PCA, who has been hitting eighth or ninth in the order, will now bat first.
Happ is getting the day off.
Meanwhile, Chicago will have its two best hitting prospects on the bench, waiting for a pinch-hit opportunity. If this lineup shift does not work, Counsell will almost have to start them for the series finale on Sunday.
