Chicago Cubs GM offers important update on top pitching prospect’s recovery from injury
The Chicago Cubs are riding high right now, atop the NL Central Division and tied for the best record in all of baseball at 26-12. They’re also in the midst of a nine-game winning streak (and a fifteen-game winning streak at home).

Their pitching staff, however, has taken some major hits.
Emerging ace Cade Horton was lost for the season in just his second start of the year, a victim of an elbow injury that required surgery. Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd is now in his second stint on the IL, this time after a freak meniscus injury that required a surgical repair.
The bullpen has also been hit hard as most of the Opening Day relief corps either finds itself on the IL or has just come back from an IL stint.
Even at the Triple-A level, pitching injuries have hit hard.
Top Pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins was put on the shelf after just his second start of the year for the Iowa Cubs. At first, the reports were just of a “sore arm,” but that was later changed to “right elbow inflammation” as he was placed on the minor league IL.

More News: Chicago Cubs good pitching news: The cavalry will be coming!
The 24-year-old hasn’t pitched since, but he is scheduled to start throwing soon. Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins recently gave an update on the highly-regarded prospect in an interview on the Mully & Haugh Show at 104.3 The Score.
Per Hawkins:
“His rehab’s been positive…He’s got a live BP this weekend, so we’re getting closer to getting him back in games. Obviously, he’s got electric stuff, He’s the type of guy that looks like a major league pitcher. We just gotta get the consistency of performance once he’s healthy and then, obviously, the consistency of health. So, he’s definitely a guy that’s on the radar, but not somebody we’re not writing in ink. Our step one is just getting healthy. Step two is figuring out of he can help us. Hopefully, it’s going to be a good problem to have as we have to figure out a way to get him into our rotation or bullpen at some point down the line.”
Most didn’t really expect the 6-foot-6 right-hander to make an impact on the major league team this season, but there was some hope that he might become a surprise breakout star like Horton last year, who started the year as the top pitching prospect and then proved his mettle with the big league Cubs.
That hope for Wiggins in 2026 may be out the window, considering the care the Cubs may give to his arm the rest of this season.
A history of injury

Wiggins was drafted in the second round by the Cubs in 2023, despite still recovering from Tommy John surgery in college. Last season, he made the climb from Double-A to Triple-A, amid plenty of concern regarding his rehabbed injury and fatigue. The organization made a concerted effort to cap his innings and kept a careful eye on the wear and tear on his arm.
Still, he managed to excel. Across three levels in 2025, he posted a 2.19 ERA in 78 innings with 97 total strikeouts.
In just two games this season, he has an ugly 5.63 ERA, but registered 10 strikeouts in 8 total innings.
