Chicago Cubs named as a top landing spot for 2x NL MVP ahead of MLB tread deadline
The Chicago Cubs finished the month of April with a record of 19-12 and in second place in the National League Central Division. While they got off to a dreadful start, they met the woeful New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies at the right time, and rattled off nine straight wins against them in what turned out to be an 11-game winning streak for Chicago.
The NL Central, though, is turning out to be a juggernaut. No team in the division finished April below .500, and all teams are separated by less than a handful of games.
As the season goes on, the Cubs will face numerous obstacles on their way to taking back the division and, hopefully, going to the World Series. Being active at the MLB trade deadline should be in the cards for them this year.
Chicago Cubs named a top trade destination for Bryce Harper

While many may assume that the Cubs are going to be in the market for a starting pitcher (or two) given the injuries to their starting rotation, Bleacher Report suggests that Chicago is a top landing spot for two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper:
“As they already rank third in scoring despite little help from incumbent first sacker Michael Busch, the Cubs don’t truly need Harper as an upgrade.
“Yet even if that is the case, the Cubs are in a perfect spot to not leave good enough alone. The point of adding Harper would be to make a key strength even more ironclad. And while Busch had a good year in 2025, he’s neither an up-and-comer nor someone the Cubs have a lot invested in. His leash should be short.
“The goal wouldn’t merely be to win the NL Central for the first time since 2020. It would be to fire a broadside at the Dodgers and Braves ahead of potential matchups in October.”
As BR notes, Michael Busch is off to a slow start this year after his breakout season in 2025. While he could still figure out, the Cubs could be looking for an upgrade at first base if his struggles continue deep into the summer.
So far this season, Harper is hitting .263/.356/.491 with six home runs and 19 RBI for the 12-19 Phillies.
Adding Harper would surely cost the Cubs multiple top prospects, especially since the eight-time All-Star is under contract through 2031. Not only that, but his salary would force Chicago to pay even more in the luxury tax, which may be worth it if they can bring home a World Series.
