Chicago White Sox expected to call up utilityman for MLB debut
The Chicago White Sox are looking to continue adding young talent to their MLB roster. The team currently holds the second American League Wild Card spot and are hoping to continue winning games. Having the farm system have players who can come up and help the big league team is critical. They are reportedly calling up an intriguing prospect who is not considered to be one of the top in the minors. Let’s take a look at who it is and what this means for the White Sox going forward.
The Chicago White Sox reportedly are calling up Rikuu Nishida
Ian Eskridge of Future Sox is reporting that the White Sox are calling up utilityman Rikuu Nishida. He has played games at all three outfield spots, but has been known as a second baseman. Nishida is an undersized utilityman as the 25-year-old is listed at 5-foot-6. However, he has been hitting well as he has a .833 OPS with one homer, 12 RBI, 43 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases through 44 games between Double-A and Triple-A.
There have not been any roster decisions made to open up a roster spot for Chicago’s 26-man roster. This will be the MLB debut for Nishida; the corresponding move could give insight as to where they will likely play him going forward. It is a bit headscratching though, as Nishida is not considered to be a top-3o prospect in the organization. However, it is his chance to prove he can continue hitting and being a threat on the basepaths.
The 11th-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft has a chance to be a significant player on the team. He will be the fifth-ever Japanese born player to play for the franchise. It will be intriguing to see how manager Will Venable decides he is going to be utilizing the undersized star.
