Chicago White Sox make franchise and MLB history in 9-4 victory over Giants

Over the last week or so, the Chicago White Sox have seen the Cleveland Guardians put some space between themselves and the rest of the American League Central Division. Fortunately, though, the White Sox have been playing relatively well themselves and are only 3.5 games out of first place.

What is more, at 26-24, Chicago is still holding onto a Wild Card spot in the American League postseason picture. While there are plenty of games left to play, the White Sox have, thus far, exceeded the expectations that many had for them before the season started.

On Friday night, they made some franchise and MLB history.

The Chicago White Sox nine-run fourth inning against the San Francisco Giants

On Friday night, the White Sox defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 9-4. Breakout ace Davis Martin went 5.2 innings, but did not have his usual sharp stuff. He gave up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven. Martin now is now 7-1 with a 2.04 ERA on the season.

Fortunately, the White Sox offense put up nine runs on only five hits, taking advantage of five walks issued by Giants pitchers.

It was the first time in franchise history that they scored nine runs while recording five or fewer hits:

All of Chicago’s runs and hits came in the fourth inning, making them also the first team in Major League history to score nine or more runs in a nine-inning game in which all of their runs and hits came in one inning:

The White Sox are the only MLB team in the modern era to score 9+ runs in a 9+ inning game with all of their runs and hits coming in the same inning (4th).

All of Chicago’s runs came in the fourth inning, a frame that was highlighted by Munetaka Murakami’s bases loaded double that drove in three runs.
