Chicago White Sox: Munetaka Murakami has rival MLB executives taking notice
When Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami first decided that he wanted to go play in Major League Baseball, many believed that he would fetch a contract worth over $100 million. As such, the Chicago White Sox were not even mentioned as a potential destination for him. Surely, his power numbers in Japan would have every big market team in the league locked up in a bidding war.
But they didn’t. Instead, MLB executives focused more on his high strikeout totals in Japan. As a result, Murakami did not get the lucrative contract offers everyone thought he would. To that end, the White Sox landed him for two years and $34 million.

So far this season, Murakami is hitting .236/.375/.564 with a Major League-leading 12 home runs to go with 23 RBI. He has also struck out 46 times in 31 games.
Per MLB.com, some rival executives are very impressed with how his offensive game has translated to Major League Baseball:
“Murakami has been very impressive,” an NL executive said. “I wasn’t sure he would get to the game power right away, but he looks like a dangerous at-bat every time up.”
“The swing-and-miss is still a concern,” an AL exec said, “but that is a pure hitter right there.”
As one can see from the executives’ comments, teams that passed on Murakami now realize that they missed out on a genuine power bat. However, they also appear to be coping with their miss by pointing to his high strikeout numbers.
The 2026 MLB season is just one month in, and a lot will happen between now and the end of the year. Even if the strikeout totals remain high, Murakami should take home the AL Rookie of the Year Award if he continues mashing as well.
