Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White watched Caitlin Clark do her thing on the court on Friday against the Golden State Valkyries.

Clark led the Fever to their third straight win, taking down the Valkyries for the first time, 90-82. The two-time WNBA All-Star went off for 22 points in her return from a one-game injury asbence. Clark barely missed another double-double after logging nine assists in 32 minutes of action, along with two rebounds, a steal, one block and four triples.

Apart from Clark’s heroics on both ends of the floor, the 24-year-old’s fiery demeanor was also on full display against Golden State. So much so that she was involved in a heated incident right before halftime.

Clark got into it with Valkyries forward Janelle Salaun as the two fought for a rebound. They had to be separated by teammates after an intense confrontation, resulting in technical fouls for both players.

For her part, however, Coach White admitted after the game that she didn’t know about Clark’s technical foul.

“I didn’t know that she got a technical either,” White said postgame after Clark revealed that she, too, wasn’t aware of the technical foul. “I guess they announced it, but nobody told us. So I thought the officials would have told us.”

White saw no issue with Clark’s actions throughout the game, though.

“I thought she was great,” said the Fever coach. “You know, she’s an emotional player, and it’s one of the things that makes her great. I thought she channeled it in a way that needed to be channeled for us to be successful, and she handled it well.”

White went on to say that she appreciates how Clark wears her heart on her sleeve during games. In fact, the veteran coach sees this as an asset rather than a flaw.

“I mean, if it’s bad or if it’s harmful to the team, you just try to channel it in a positive way,” White said. “Emotion is a good thing. I’m emotional, I’m fiery. And when it’s channeled in the right way, it benefits.

“It’s one of the things that makes her special, and you don’t want to take it away from her. There are times where it’s like, ‘Okay, we’ve got to maintain poise and composure.’ But there are also times where it feeds us and carries us on runs that we might not have made if we didn’t have it.”
