Indy 500 grand marshal Caitlin Clark admits leaving race early: ‘I’m not huge into racing’
Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark had the honor of being the grand marshal of the 110th running of the famed Indianapolis 500 race on Sunday. Bestowed only on the most esteemed personalities in Indiana, Clark followed in the footsteps of the biggest names that preceded her as grand marshal.
Clark took center stage after the national anthem was performed. The two-time WNBA All-Star came out to a warm welcome from the hundreds of thousands of fans who flocked to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the big race. As grand marshal, it was Clark who commanded the racers to get into their cars right before the green flag dropped.

Clark, however, admitted that she did not see out the race. Instead, she opted to leave the racetrack and head home after she had completed her duties as grand marshal. Nevertheless, the Fever guard expressed how unforgettable her experience was.
“Super cool,” Clark told reporters on Monday. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a place that had so many people. Obviously, you know how many people are going to be going into it, but I think once you get out there in front of that many people, it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh.’
“But really fun. Obviously, a really cool finish too down the stretch. I’m not huge into racing — I’m still learning about it. I left before the race was over, but I was watching at home on TV and I was screaming at the TV. So it was pretty fun and pretty cool.”
Clark did not explain why she left the race early. However, the 24-year-old made sure to catch the tail end of the race from the comfort of her own home. She was pretty passionate about the finish, too.
Felix Soenqvist rose to the top on Sunday. He edged out David Malukas by just 0.0233 seconds, marking the closest finish in race history.
As for Clark, she will return to the court with the Fever on Thursday when they face the Golden State Valkyries. Indiana will be on the road as it looks to improve on its 4-2 record.
