Promising 18-year-old White Sox pitching prospect undergoes Tommy John surgery
The Chicago White Sox have no shortage of promising pitching prospects moving through their farm system. Left-handers Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith headline the group, while Tanner McDougal and Christian Oppor are also ranked among the organization’s top 10 overall prospects according to MLB Pipeline.
Outside of the White Sox’ top 30 prospects sits 18-year-old Yobal Rodriguez. Signed as part of the club’s international class for just $300,000, Rodriguez showed promising potential during his time in the Dominican Summer League last season.
Unfortunately, he has yet to pitch in 2026, when he was expected to likely begin the year in the Arizona Complex League, because he recently underwent Tommy John surgery.

According to Francys Romero, Rodriguez has already undergone elbow surgery and will not pitch in a game this season. For the 6-foot-2 right-hander, whose fastball was already reaching the low 90s at just 18 years old, his development will now be temporarily put on hold after an encouraging 2025 campaign in the Dominican Summer League, where he posted a 2.97 ERA across 30.1 innings.

For the Chicago White Sox, this is an unfortunate setback for one of the more lesser known, but intriguing young arms lower in their system. While Rodriguez was still years away from the major leagues, his early results and physical projection had started generating quiet optimism about his long-term potential.
The good news is that Rodriguez is still extremely young, giving him plenty of time to recover and continue developing once healthy. Tommy John surgery has become a common hurdle for young pitchers, and if he returns with the same stuff and promise he showed in the Dominican Summer League, he could still work his way back onto the prospect radar in the years ahead.
