WNBA: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

The Indiana Fever defeated the Golden State Valkyries 90-82 on Friday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Fever guard Sophie Cunningham provided a crucial spark with 11 points off the bench. Her performance helped secure Indiana’s third straight win.

The Fever even highlighted a key play between Cunningham and Caitlin Clark in a video posted on X. In the clip, the Fever star delivered a crisp pass to the veteran guard, who scored through contact in the third quarter.

Clark returned from a back injury and led the team with 22 points and nine assists. She made four shots from beyond the arc.

Aliyah Boston dominated the paint with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Kelsey Mitchell added 19 points and shot a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Sophie Cunningham left with forehead scratch after intense game

The high-intensity game left Cunningham with a long scratch across her forehead. The Fever star posted a video on her Instagram stories revealing her battle scar.

“So, during the game I came out, and I literally leaned over on the bench, and I was like, ‘Ty (Harris), do I have a scratch on my head?’ Like, it hurts,” Cunningham said in the video. “She goes, ‘No, you’re fine.’ I literally looked in the mirror, and I look like freaking Harry Potter.”

The referees missed the contact and did not call a foul on the play. Cunningham made sure to highlight this in her caption. “No foul by the way,” she wrote.

The WNBA is implementing stricter officiating this season to reduce excessive physicality, yet referees still missed the contact on Cunningham.

Indiana now stands at 4-2 this season after beating the Valkyries. The team will hit the road to face Golden State again in San Francisco on Thursday. With a five-day break ahead, the Fever will have ample time to rest and make any necessary adjustments before the rematch.
