Stephanie White addresses Indiana Fever decision

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

The Indiana Fever started the season slow, losing two of its first three games. Some fans called for changes, while others believed it was just a matter of time before the team turned things around.

Supporters on social media also criticized head coach Stephanie White for her in-game decisions. The Fever bounced back strong with three straight wins, including Saturday’s 90-82 victory over the Golden State Valkyries. The winning streak silenced the doubters as the team flexed its might.

Caitlin Clark led the way with 22 points built on four three-pointers, along with nine assists. Meanwhile, Aliyah Boston posted a 22-point, 16-rebound double-double, and Kelsey Mitchell provided 19 points. Sophie Cunningham came off the bench for the third consecutive contest, registering 11 points in 28 minutes.

However, White and her staff do not leave anything to chance. On Friday, they ensured the roster received another boost.

Indiana Fever: Stephanie White discusses decision to sign Grace VanSlooten

Indiana signed Grace VanSlooten on Friday and announced the move on social media. The team waived veteran guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough one day before.

During her pregame availability on Saturday, White discussed the decision to sign the former Oregon star and what she brings to the Fever.

“I like her length,” White said. “She’s versatile and athletic. She’s a bouncy player with really good size and skill set, and she understands how to play the game. I also like her versatility on both ends of the floor.”

The Storm waived the 6-foot-3 forward on Monday after she appeared in four games. She averaged 4.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals. VanSlooten provides Indiana with more frontcourt depth and could be a valuable contributor if they give her consistent playing time.

She was thrown right into the action on Friday, registering two minutes off the bench. VanSlooten, however, was not able to record any counting stats during her brief time on the floor.

The Fever will visit the Valkyries on Thursday before they travel to Moda Center to face the Portland Fire two days later.
