White Sox getting the last laugh in many ways after $20 million heist
The Chicago White Sox were basically begging another team to take Luis Robert Jr.’s $20 million salary off their hands for the 2026 MLB campaign, and they found a gullible trading partner in the New York Mets.
The Mets not only took on Robert’s entire salary, but also sent infielder/outfielder Luisangel Acuna (a former top prospect) and pitcher Truman Pauley to the White Sox in return.
Robert once appeared to be a rising star in Chicago, particularly in 2023 when he smashed 38 home runs to go along with an .857 OPS, but since then, the 28-year-old has seen his production fall off a cliff, and injuries have played a significant role.
So what do you know? Robert is injured again, this time due to a lumbar spine disc herniation which has resulted in a trip to the 10-day injured list. And if we’re being honest, that sounds pretty serious and could potentially lead to an extended stay on the shelf for the center fielder.
While you obviously wish Robert and hope he gets health soon, the White Sox can’t say they didn’t see this coming.

Sometimes, MLB teams think they are smarter than everyone else. The Mets are a perfect example.
New York made a flurry of moves this offseason to try and bolster a disappointing roster that won just 83 games in 2025 in spite of handing Juan Soto near a billion dollars, but just about all of the decisions the Mets made — including trading for Robert — were met with raised eyebrows.
For the White Sox, getting out from under Robert’s salary was incentive enough to make the trade, especially after the 28-year-old posted back-to-back sub-.700 OPS campaigns in 2024 and 2025. During his time on the field for New York this season, he has slashed .224/.327/.329, good for a .656 OPS right in line with what he did his last two years in the Windy City.
To be fair, Acuna has not exactly lit it up for Chicago, owning a .169/.235/.182 slash line. Plus, Pauley has struggled mightily down at Single-A. But at least there is some hope for Acuna, who is currently manning center field for the White Sox. Not only that, but Chicago is 16-18 and is very much in playoff contention. The Mets? They’re just 12-22 and have been one of the worst teams in baseball all season long.
Robert has another $20 million club option for 2027, and at this rate, New York probably can’t wait until it can decline it.
