White Sox prospect acquired in Jordan Hicks trade impresses in 1st Triple-A start after spring training injury concern
Back in February, the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox completed a trade centered around pitchers. Chicago acquired Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin, while Boston received then-No. 21 prospect Gage Ziehl along with two players to be named later, who still have yet to be announced.
Hicks has become an important part of Will Venable’s bullpen, posting a 3.95 ERA across 15 appearances while recording one save and two holds. Meanwhile, Sandlin had his spring slowed by elbow soreness, leading the organization to ease him into action. He opened the season with a pair of High-A outings as part of an injury rehab assignment before making his first Triple-A start on Saturday, May 2. The right-hander typically sits between 95-97 mph and is capable of reaching triple digits with his fastball. While command has remained a developmental challenge, injuries have also interrupted his progress, including an oblique issue in 2023 and a forearm strain in 2024. Those setbacks are a major reason why Chicago took a cautious approach with his buildup entering the 2026 regular season.
As for his 2026 debut with the Charlotte Knights, Sandlin was limited to four innings and 48 pitches. He allowed just two hits while striking out four batters and did not surrender a run. Those restrictions will likely ease as the season progresses, but there is little reason for the Chicago White Sox to rush the talented right-hander back into a heavier workload and risk disrupting his development after previous injury setbacks. Overall, the early returns from this trade are already encouraging. Hicks has stabilized an important bullpen role at the major league level, while Sandlin still offers significant upside as a high-velocity arm working his way through the system. If Sandlin can stay healthy and continue refining his command, Chicago may ultimately come away from this deal with two impactful pitching pieces that fit both the present and future of the organization.
