Bears’ offseason gaffe no one was talking about is now rearing its ugly head
The Chicago Bears have certainly had a strange offseason, as they didn’t really address any of the most glaring needs the team had. They needed pass-rushing help. They didn’t get any. They needed a left tackle. They didn’t get one.
There was also one other area of need that the Bears themselves created, but no one has really discussed it: wide receiver.
Chicago traded away D.J. Moore and allowed Olamide Zacchaeus to walk via free agency. Its response was to sign Kalif Raymond and select Zavion Thomas in the third round of the NFL Draft. This even though Raymond is an ancillary option, at best, and Thomas was widely viewed as a reach on Day 2.
That left Caleb Williams with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III as his only dependable wide receivers, and both of them dealt with injuries last season. In fact, Odunze is now dealing with some complications from the foot injury he had in 2025, saying he might never be the same again.
So what exactly were the Bears doing here?
The Chicago Bears screwed up at wide receiver

Even if Odunze and Burden are able to stay 100 percent healthy throughout all of 2026, Chicago still severely lacks depth in its wide receiver room. Maybe Thomas will surprise everyone and have a huge rookie campaign, but that probably won’t happen.
Why didn’t the Bears go out and land another established wide receiver to replace Moore? They didn’t have to acquire a Pro Bowler; just go out and get a proven target who could make life easier for Williams in his pivotal third NFL season.
For everyone talking about Chicago’s failure to land an edge rusher, its receiving situation is every bit as concerning.
Yes, the Bears probably should have brought in another pass rusher, but they also should have made an effort to nab another wide out after subtracting two of Williams’ most critical weapons from a year ago.
The good news is there is still time for Chicago to add someone. Names like Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen and Deebo Samuel are still available, so the Bears should absolutely get on the phone and see if they can convince one of them to come aboard.
