Chicago Cubs pitcher irate after loss to Blue Jays
The Chicago Cubs can’t find consistency, and a pitcher voiced his frustration after a dismal collapse agains the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
The Cubs started their three-game series against the defending American League champs with a 16-2 win on Friday. Chicago had a 5-0 lead on the Blue Jays on Saturday, but have up eight runs in the seventh and eighth inning before losing 8-6 in front of 40,706 fans at Wrigley Field.
Starting pitcher Colin Rea had a solid outing for the Cubs, giving up no runs and just three hits in 5.1 innings pitched. But the relief pitching was a problem. Trent Thornton allowed three earned runs. Caleb Thielbar gave up two earned runs.
Right-handed reliever Jacob Webb earned the loss, giving up two singles before allowing Toronto third baseman Kazuma Okamoto to hit a three-run blast to put the Blue Jays up 8-5.
Following the game, Webb took responsibility for the loss, saying he’s made too many mistakes in recent games.
“I didn’t (expletive) execute today, plain and simple,” Webb said, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN. “The last few outings, I’ve made mistake after mistake and it’s pretty (expletive) frustrating. I’m not gonna lie.”

Webb gave up a run in each of his two appearances against the Colorado Rockies this week in 2.0 innings pitched. He allowed three hits and two earned runs in the Cubs’ 3-2 loss to the Rockies on June 10.
Webb entered the game with two saves, but had a 3.90 ERA in 33 appearances.
The mistakes are mounting for Webb and the Cubs.
With the loss, Chicago dropped to 40-37. The Cubs are 6.5 games back from the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central.
