White Sox connected to unexpected $313 million trade amid wild season

The Chicago White Sox may have gotten hammered by the New York Yankees on Tuesday night, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have still been one of the best stories in baseball this season and are smack dab in the middle of the American League playoff picture.

The White Sox are in first place in the AL Central and have gone 32-18 since April 17, representing the best record in the American League during that time.

However, it’s clear that Chicago could still use some help, and it may look to buy some pieces between now and the MLB trade deadline.

No one expected the White Sox to actually be adding players heading into the campaign. Everyone assumed they would be sellers. But they are playing well above expectations, so they could try to swing some deals. But how aggressive will they actually be?

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has pitched a wild trade idea for Chicago, naming the South Siders a landing spot for San Francisco Giants slugger Rafael Devers.

The White Sox could absolutely stand to add some more lineup depth, and that’s even more relevant with Munetaka Murakami sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

The Giants would surely love to get out from under Devers’ contract, a 10-year, $313.5 million pact he signed with the Boston Red Sox back in 2023. The deal runs through 2033, and San Francisco is not exactly getting the best returns on it after acquiring the 29-year-old via trade last season.

Devers leads the majors with 21 doubles this year, but he is slashing just .235/.293/.413 with nine home runs and 33 RBI over 307 plate appearances in what has been the worst showing of his big-league career. Would Chicago — which owns one of the lowest payrolls in all of baseball — really be willing to absorb Devers’ contract for that production?

To be fair, the lefty slugger smash 35 homers to go along with an .851 OPS in 2025, and he has historically been a terrific hitter, boasting a lifetime .273/.346/.501 slash line. He would also obviously cost very little in terms of prospect capital. In fact, the Giants may be willing to send a prospect or two to the White Sox just to dump his salary.

But is this a move that Chicago would realistically make? It just doesn’t seem very likely unless San Francisco is willing to eat a good portion of Devers’ deal. And even then, it really isn’t all that probable.
