Bears WR Rome Odunze tells the truth on what sets Ben Johnson apart
Rome Odunze was one of the Chicago Bears’ breakout players in 2025. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver had a big year, emerging as one of the team’s most potent weapons on offense.
Odunze played 12 games in the regular season, registering 44 catches for 661 yards. In 2024, he scored three touchdowns in 17 games. The former Washington standout doubled that tally to six TDs in five fewer games last season.
There’s no denying that head coach Ben Johnson played a key role in Odunze’s rapid development in Year 2. The 24-year-old is looking to further elevate his game this coming season, and Coach Johnson will be giving the young wideout all the support he needs.

Odunze had nothing but good things to say about Johnson in a recent interview for The Journey media. The Bears WR sounded off on why he believes his head coach is a cut above the rest. Odunze also expressed his belief that Johnson has the potential to become one of the greatest coaches in NFL history when it is all said and done.
“It’s hard to describe him as a human being because he’s different, man,” Odunze said. “He likes to joke around with us and have fun, but he loves football.
“He works very hard at his craft; he wants to be one of the best, if not the best coach to do it when his time is done. He’s on the trajectory to do that.
“He’s very diligent, very precise in his mechanics and how he goes about leading the organization the way that he does.”

Johnson takes his craft seriously, but as Odunze said, the incoming second-year coach makes sure to connect with his players on a personal level. Odunze described him as a “cool dude” off the field.
Johnson led the Bears to the NFC North title in his first year at the helm. The 40-year-old also coached Chicago to its first playoff win in 15 years, defeating their bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers, in the Wild Card Round.
With rising stars like Odunze at his disposal, bigger things are expected from Johnson in year 2.
