Chicago Cubs DFA Jake Woodford as key reliever returns from injury
The Chicago Cubs fell to the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 on Friday night. While starting pitcher Shota Imanaga pitched six strong innings of one-run ball, the offense did not give him any support whatsoever. Additionally, newly signed relief pitcher Jake Woodford gave up three runs in the two innings he covered.
Previously, Woodford had been with the Milwaukee Brewers, but was designated for assignment following an unsuccessful start to the season. Chicago decided to pick him up and parted ways with Bryse Wilson to make room for him.
Ironically, Wilson was then signed by the Brewers. He pitched a scoreless inning relief of Milwaukee on Saturday, the same day the Cubs moved on from Woodford.
The Chicago Cubs designate Jake Woodford for assignment as Phil Maton returns

On Saturday afternoon, it was reported that Woodford has been designated for assignment as Phil Maton is returning from the injured list:

Phil Maton reinstated from the 15-day IL.
Jake Woodford DFA’d.

Maton was on the 15-day injured list with knee tendonitis, an injury the Cubs seem to blame for his horrendous season in 2026. So far this year, he is 0-1 with a 6.08 ERA in 30 appearances.
Woodford, of course, will be placed on waivers. If he clears waivers, he can be out-righted to Triple-A or choose to become a free agent. When he was DFA’d by Milwaukee, he cleared waivers and chose free agency, which is how Chicago got him in the first place.
