Chicago Cubs: MLB analyst reveals which player is most likely to be traded at the deadline
The Chicago Cubs are 58-45 so far this season, six games back of first place in the National League Central Division. Following a tumultuous first few months of the year, the Cubs were able to weather the storm and have proven once again to be one of the best teams in the National League.
That being said, the year has already taken its toll on the roster. Most notably, the Cubs pitching staff, both the starting rotation and bullpen, have been ravaged by injuries. At one point, they could have fielded the 13 pitchers necessary for an MLB roster with the number of arms they had on the shelf.
The Chicago Cubs may have to trade Kevin Alcantara
Because of their dire need for pitching, Chicago has been linked to multiple pitchers as the weeks have gone by. With the MLB trade deadline quickly approaching, the rumors have only gotten hotter.
The Athletic recently published an article in which they predicted which member of each MLB organization was the most likely to be traded. In their opinion, Cubs prospect Kevin Alcantara is the most likely to be moved so that Chicago can get the pitching they so desperately need:
“Alcántara has shown power and speed in the minors, though in the big leagues the former hasn’t shown up yet and the latter hasn’t kept him from making some base-running mistakes. But he’s a plus defender in center who teams can dream on at the plate and still only 24. He’s out of options next year and isn’t guaranteed an everyday spot with the Cubs next year, so trying to maximize his value makes sense.”
In 19 games up in the Majors this season, Alcantara hit just .200/.238/.200 with three RBI. However, in 55 games with Triple-A Iowa, he is hitting .273/.367/.560 with 17 home runs and 42 RBI.
While giving up Alcantara in a trade is not ideal, the fact of the matter is that Chicago’s minor league system ranks just 24th in baseball. They simply do not have many prospects that other teams will want, but Alcantara is one that they would gladly take as part of an exchange.
