Chicago White Sox predicted to trade former 1st round pick ahead of MLB deadline

The Chicago White Sox are in a position that very few, if anyone, expected them to be in at this point in the season. Prior to 2026, Chicago had lost more than 100 games in three consecutive seasons. This included a Major League record 121 losses in 2024.

As it stands now, though, they are 54-48 and in first place in the American League Central Division. In the past, the White Sox have been one of the worst teams in baseball and, as such, traded away many of their more productive players at the MLB deadline each year. Now, though, they are making a push for the postseason and are expected to trade for talented Major Leaguers instead of sending them away.

In order to add, though, they are going to have to part with notable prospects.

The Chicago White Sox are predicted to trade Billy Carlson

There are multiple holes that Chicago has on its roster as they enter the season’s home stretch. Among these are pitching and catching, two positions that are going to cost a bit to address due to the scarcity of high-profile players that will be available at those positions.

This is not to say that there will not be any, but rather that any needle-pushers that are on the trade block are going to cost interested teams some noteworthy prospects.

With this in mind, The Athletic believes that 2025 first round pick Billy Carlson is the White Sox prospect most likely to be traded:

“Carlson was Chicago’s first-round draft pick in 2025, taken 10th overall as a high schooler out of California. The White Sox, notably, drafted another shortstop No. 1 overall earlier this month. That’s to say nothing of their current young shortstop, Colson Montgomery, who is a bona fide great player.

“So while you can never have too much shortstop talent in your system, parting with Carlson might make some sense to bolster a club that could win the AL Central, and maybe even get a postseason bye. It’s been an incredible turnaround, and Chicago needs to capitalize at the deadline by adding some pitching.”

The 19-year-old shortstop is hitting .263/.391/.354 with no home runs and 18 RBI in 48 games this year, which is his first season of professional baseball.

As The Athletic notes, the White Sox just drafted a shortstop with the first overall pick this year, and Colson Montgomery has established himself as a great player in the Majors already.

In other words, they can afford to part ways with Carlson, who has a former first round pick would draw interest from teams looking to add prospects.
