Cubs’ latest trade proposal will have fans feeling World Series bound

Aside from their brutal 17-1 loss at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, the Chicago Cubs have largely righted the ship.

The Cubs have won 15 of their last 20 games to re-assert themselves as serious National League playoff contenders, which followed an absolutely miserable stretch in which they went just 7-22 and appeared headed toward potentially selling at the MLB trade deadline.

We now know almost certainly that Chicago will not be selling. In fact, the Cubs are expected to be one of the more aggressive teams on the trade front between now and Aug. 3.

Chicago has a multitude of needs on its roster, with the primary hole being in the starting rotation. But while the Cubs need starting pitchers, they could also use some relievers, as well, especially given Daniel Palencia’s multiple IL stints.

There should be some intriguing bullpen arms available in the coming weeks, and Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller has pitched an idea that would land the Cubbies a reunion with Aroldis Chapman.

Chapman famously pitched in Chicago for a few months in 2016, helping the Cubs win their first World Series since 1908. Chicago had acquired the left-hander from the New York Yankees midway through that campaign, and now, the Cubs may look to snatch him from another AL East club in 2026: the Boston Red Sox.

Miller’s proposal has Chicago sending catcher Ariel Armas and pitcher Brooks Caple to Boston in exchange for Chapman.

“Chapman is the most intriguing closer believed to be on the trade block. He successfully converted each of his first 14 save chances prior to a couple of hiccups in late June, but hard to argue with 16-for-18 on the year and nearly 400 saves in his career,” Miller wrote. “Chapman is making $13M in 2026 and is owed $13M next season, provided he reaches 40 IP (currently at 24.2) and passes an end-of-year physical. But that’s a price the Cubs can afford to pay to add something close to a sure thing to their mess of a bullpen.”

The Cubs would not surrendering any top-tier prospects in this package, as Armas is ranked 18th and Caple is 13th in Chicago’s system (via MLB.com).

Chapman has pitched to the tune of a 2.10 ERA this season, allowing 21 hits while racking up 33 strikeouts over 25.2 innings of work. He has been a bit more shaky lately, but, for the most part, the flamethrower has still been dominant.

Chicago needs all of the pitching help it can get, so Chapman would absolutely represent a terrific addition while also having Cubs fans feeling nostalgic — and perhaps World Series bound once again.
