Fever star Sophie Cunningham reacts to retirement news
Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has nothing but praise for WNBA legend and former teammate Diana Taurasi ahead of her jersey retirement.
Cunningham has been one of Taurasi’s closest teammates and friends during their time with the Phoenix Mercury. The current Fever guard gave massive praise to the three-time WNBA champion.
In a recent interview, Cunningham shared her thoughts on Taurasi’s upcoming jersey retirement ceremony with the Phoenix on Aug. 16.
“I just love her man, you know there’s never going to be another Diana Taurasi ever,” Cunningham said. “I think she is the one who taught me how to be an ultimate pro; I just think that she is gold down to the core. What she did for our game and what she’s gonna continue to do for our game is awesome.”
The eighth-year player out of Missouri also stated that she’s glad Taurasi has been receiving her well-deserved opportunities and acknowledgments even after her professional career.
“I love seeing her in commercials and her getting her flowers, the money opportunities that she’s been having,” Cunningham continued. “I’m just proud of her, she deserves every award, every recognition you and possibly think up.”

Sophie Cunningham willing to skip game with the Fever to attend Diana Taurasi’s jersey retirement
During the same interview, Cunningham was also asked whether she would be in attendance for Taurasi’s jersey retirement ceremony next month.
The Fever have a game scheduled against the Atlanta Dream on the same day, but Cunningham made it clear that if Taurasi wants her there, she will do what she can to witness the special moment.
“I’ll probably be playing,” she said. “But if my mom wants me to call in sick, then yeah, I’ll be there.”
Cunningham and Taurasi played for six seasons together in the Mercury uniform. Their relationship has grown stronger over the years.
