Our Jets Training Camp thread will feature live updates throughout practice, including news, photos, videos, and observations from Florham Park. Before the first practice even began, quarterback Geno Smith made it clear he believes the Jets are entering camp with momentum.
Geno Smith Says the Jets Built Positive Momentum
I want to start by saying I really feel like coming out of OTAs, I felt like we built some positive momentum and I’m really happy with where this team is right now.
Putting the Offseason Behind Him
I really hate the fact that something I was a part of could have been a distraction for this team, my teammates, this organization. I’m happy that I’m able to put this behind me; I’m looking forward to moving forward and continuing to build day-by-day with my guys.
The veteran quarterback said he has already spoken with head coach Aaron Glenn, general manager Darren Mougey and the team’s veteran leaders, adding that everyone is focused on the season ahead.
We’ll put this behind us and we’re moving forward.
That message of moving forward was consistent throughout Smith’s media session. He repeatedly talked about building, improving and staying focused on the daily work instead of looking too far ahead.
High Expectations for the Jets
I have high expectations for the team.
I believe we have not only the right guys in the locker room, but the coaching staff, front office, and there’s a lot of things to be positive about as a Jet fan and as a player and as a part of the organization.
For a team looking to rebound this season, Smith believes the combination of talent, coaching and organizational alignment gives the Jets every reason to be optimistic. He made it clear that confidence inside the locker room is high, but that confidence must now be backed up once the team takes the field.
Building Chemistry During the Offseason
Part of that optimism comes from the work many of the players put in together during the break. Smith organized workouts in Florida with several teammates, saying the time together helped strengthen both chemistry and preparation before Jets training camp opened.
I’m super excited. Everyone came back, like I said, war ready and ready for the long haul. But, it’s a day-to-day process… we’re focused on the day-to-day stuff and just getting better each and every day.
When asked about those offseason workouts, Smith said they included both football and time away from the field.
I got together with a bunch of the guys. We trained on and off the field, we hung out, just kind of did what teammates do… I really think we made some progress in the past few weeks and I look forward to seeing how we can build on that.
One of the players Smith highlighted was Garrett Wilson. The two spent time working together during the offseason, something that should help as they continue developing chemistry in Frank Reich’s offense.
It’s been great. I think the world of Garrett. He’s a great receiver, a tremendous person. He’s a great teammate as well. I look forward to building with him, but not only him, all the guys.
Geno Smith on Aaron Glenn
So far so good. AG has done a great job of laying out the blueprint for this team and where he wants to take us, and it’s our job to bring that into manifestation. I think the world of Coach Glenn… it’s our job to go prove him right.
Jets Training Camp Starts Now
The first practice begins this morning, and for the first time this summer the Jets will be able to translate the optimism from OTAs, minicamp and the offseason workouts onto the practice field. Geno Smith believes the foundation has already been built. Over the next month, the challenge will be proving that the positive momentum he described can carry into the regular season.
