Jets Training Camp Report: Offense Wins Day 1 as Breece Hall, Jowon Briggs Stand Out

The first full practice of New York Jets training camp is in the books, and while it is always dangerous to draw too many conclusions from one day in shorts and shells, there were still plenty of encouraging signs. The offense appeared to have the upper hand for most of the afternoon, moving the ball efficiently through the air while also finding success on the ground. Geno Smith looked comfortable running the offense, the running backs consistently created explosive plays, and several young defenders flashed despite the offense’s overall success.

This is all based on legendary camp reporter, KRL, who is there live this week taking in all the action. Shane Sullivan is also at each practice, so JetNation will be bringing you plenty of insight this summer. Below are KRL’s observations from today’s session.

General Notes

  • Players practiced in shells and shorts.
  • Practice lasted approximately 1½ hours.
  • Major construction and renovations continue at the Jets Florham Park facility, which is why only one practice is open to the public. The wing that housed the weight room has been completely torn down and is being rebuilt from the foundation up. As a result, the public grandstands have been removed, and a large temporary weight room now occupies one of the practice fields.
  • Overall, the offense won the day. There were plenty of completions, several explosive runs, and only one possible interception. Cade Klubnik had a pass tipped into traffic that may have been intercepted.

Special Teams Notes

  • The punter and returner jobs appear to be settled with Austin McNamara and Isaiah Williams.
  • Neither kicker, Jason Sanders nor Cade York, participated in kicking drills during the media viewing period.
  • Players taking return reps included:
    • Jamaal Pritchett (WR)
    • D.T. Sheffield (WR)
    • Caullin Lacy (WR)
    • Minkah Fitzpatrick, whose appearance as a returner was certainly unexpected.

Defense Notes

  • Due to media restrictions, formations cannot be discussed in detail, but keep an eye on how Aaron Glenn deploys Minkah Fitzpatrick and David Bailey once preseason games begin. Glenn showed some creative usage for both players during today’s practice.
  • Defensive tackle Jowon Briggs, who joined the team after last year’s camp, had an impressive showing with multiple pressures up the middle.
  • David Bailey flashed during 11-on-11 work, generating edge pressure on Geno Smith that forced an incompletion and nearly resulted in an interception.
  • Undrafted rookie linebacker Chase Wilson (West Virginia) stood out throughout practice. He displayed excellent coverage, nearly intercepted a Bailey Zappe pass, and stuffed multiple running plays for little or no gain during team drills.

Offense Notes

  • Breece Hall and Braelon Allen both had productive afternoons.
  • Each ripped off several explosive runs while also contributing effectively in the screen game.

Jets Quarterback Notes Geno Smith

Smith had a clean practice, completing numerous passes while distributing the football to receivers, tight ends and running backs. Most of his work came in the short-to-intermediate passing game.

Cade Klubnik

Klubnik had a solid day, showing good mobility by rolling outside the pocket to find completions. He also demonstrated a willingness to challenge defenses vertically. Although he missed deep attempts to Arian Smith and Isaiah Williams, it was encouraging to see him take those shots.

Bailey Zappe

Zappe dropped his first two snaps.

Enough said.
