Notre Dame gains $17 million help, sells its soul to uniform gods

A Notre Dame Fighting Irish helmets rests on the field before the game between the Fighting Irish and the Navy Midshipmen at MetLife Stadium.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have one of the more respected uniforms in college football.

Like the Irish, Alabama, Texas, USC, Michigan, and Ohio State haven’t made huge tweaks to their iconic uniforms even as much of the sports changes for the better and worse.

Until this year.

Earlier on Tuesday, reporters surfaced that Ohio State is set to put a JPMorgan Chase patch on its uniforms for all sports in exchange for $17 million. A few hours later, Notre Dame revealed it would put a SoFi patch on all of its uniforms. Per Pete Nakos of On3, the Irish are set to receive $18-20 million per year for the patch.

The Irish plan to establish a fund to support their student-athletes with the collaboration with the finance company.

“Our ‘4 for Forever’ promise at Notre Dame is paramount to providing the best student-athlete experience in the country,” said Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, via the school’s website.

“SoFi shares in this commitment to developing strong, ambitious leaders who are set up for success at Notre Dame and beyond. Together, our relationship will create lasting value for our student-athletes and their families for generations to come.”

The Fighting Irish need to add additional revenue to keep up with the ever-increasing costs of running an athletics department in the NIL era, a program for universities big and small, public and private.

Notre Dame has been dominant in the recruiting cycle for the class of 2027, and it takes a lot of money to bring in elite athletes that will help the school compete for a national championship, which is the expectation of the fan base.

At the same time, the Notre Dame’s iconic uniform will never be the same after selling out to SoFi. And eventually, the uniform could go under more drastic changes as the game adds more corporate sponsors.

The Irish kept corporate ads out of Notre Dame Stadium to preserve the aesthetic of the stadium, but corporations will be on display on the field.
