OTL: Ravens’ Most Significant Offseason Addition May Not Be A Newcomer

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Baltimore Ravens spent the offseason making several notable additions in hopes of rebounding from a brutally underwhelming 2025 campaign.

General manager Eric DeCosta addressed several needs through free agency and the draft, welcoming the talents of veterans like Trey Hendrickson and Calais Campbell while reinforcing the offensive line with Olaivavega Ioane, John Simpson and Ethan Pocic.

New head coach Jesse Minter will have plenty of talent in his arsenal as he navigates his first season in Charm City.

But Baltimore’s most important offseason boost may not be a newcomer at all.

Defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike is poised to make his long-awaited comeback in 2026, moving one step closer to that goal after being medically cleared to return by independent doctors on Saturday, per The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec.

He was placed on the team’s physically unable to perform list over the weekend, opening the door for a full return.

A two-time Pro-Bowler, Madubuike has journeyed through a tough 10 months after suffering what was feared to be a career-ending neck injury that prematurely terminated his 2025 season. Now, the 28-year-old could practice as early as next week.

It is no secret that Baltimore’s pass rush is significantly more dangerous with Madubuike in the mix.

Before suffering the injury, he established himself as one of the NFL’s premier interior defensive linemen. The former third-round pick accumulated 19.5 sacks across his previous two campaigns.

In 2024, his second Pro-Bowl season, Madubuike achieved a career-high 40 hurries. The year before that, he set a career record for most pressures in a season with 65, placing him fourth among all interior defensive linemen in 2023 (min. 400 snaps).

From the start of the 2023 season to the point that he was placed on injured reserve after Baltimore’s Week 2 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Madubuike led all defensive tackles with 21.5 sacks. The former Texas A&M Aggie had the best pass rush win percentage (20.3) among Ravens’ pass rushers last season despite playing just two games all season.

Madubuike’s importance to the Ravens extends well beyond his box score numbers. The sheer presence of the two-time Pro-Bowler is enough to boost the surrounding pass rush, as was the case when he was on the field in 2023 and 2024.

Baltimore boasted three players with upwards of 45 pressures in 2024 and four the year before that. Without a full season of healthy Madubuike in 2025, they had just one.

The Ravens also posted an AFC-worst 4.6% sack percentage a season ago, a shocking drop from their 8.1% sack percentage in 2023 and 8.0% sack percentage in 2024–both of Madubuike’s Pro-Bowl seasons.

The return of the 71st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft should do wonders for Minter’s new-look defense in Baltimore.

And it may also feature the best supporting cast of pass rushers he’s had in his six-year career.

The last time that Madubuike played a full season (2024), the Ravens’ most efficient edge rushers were veteran Kyle Van Noy and former first-round pick Odafe Oweh. Fast forward two offseasons, and Baltimore now possesses a two-time All-Pro in Hendrickson as well as young second-round selections in Mike Green and Zion Young.

Hendrickson has accrued over 60 pressures in each of his last four healthy seasons with the Bengals (2021-2024). The former third-round pick’s Pro Football Focus pass rush grade has not dipped under 90 since 2021.

A four-time Pro-Bowler and one-time first-team All-Pro, Hendrickson has 39 sacks across his last 41 games and owns the fourth-most sacks by a pass rusher since 2021 (61.0).

Instead of accounting for one pass rusher with multiple Pro Bowls and a double-digit sack season, opponents will now need to game plan for two.

Three, if you count Campbell, though his role will likely be purely rotational as he enters his age 40 season. The 18-year veteran will pair with Travis Jones to round out the team’s arsenal of threats on the interior defensive line.

Campbell, who was a member of the organization from 2020 to 2022, tallied 33 pressures with the Arizona Cardinals last season while Jones posted a team-leading 47 for Baltimore.

The trio of defensive tackles offers a formidable defensive front for Minter in his first year as the team’s head coach. Meanwhile, Hendrickson and the young edge rusher corps will be attacking the quarterback from all angles.

If Madubuike can return to the form he displayed prior to his season-ending neck injury, Baltimore could be set to own one of the league’s most fearsome pass rush units.
