Sharper Image: Looking Back on Old 55
Whenever we get nostalgia and the Baltimore Ravens collide, inevitably we land on the 2000 Ravens. That team is the navigational north when a trip down memory lane is in process. Names roll off the tongue like a purple liturgy. Ray. Goose. Woodson. Adams. Boulware. But somewhere in the middle of that murderer’s row was a guy who never sought the spotlight, never needed it, and quietly did his job at a level that made the whole machine hum.
Jamie Sharper.
If you’re of a certain vintage, you remember No. 55 flying around Memorial Stadium and later PSINet, cleaning up everything that leaked outside of Ray Lewis‘ considerable orbit. And if you’ve lost track of him since — well, pull up a chair, because the second act of Jamie Sharper’s football life might be the best story of all.
The Draft That Built a Dynasty’s Defense
Let’s rewind to April of 1997. Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens’ brain trust were two drafts into building what would become the greatest defense of the modern era, and they went linebacker-heavy. Peter Boulware came off the board fourth overall. Thirty picks later, at No. 34 in the second round, Baltimore called the name of a rangy 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker out of the University of Virginia: Harry James Sharper Jr. — Jamie to everyone who knew him.
The scouting report out of Charlottesville read like a tackling manual. Sharper left UVA ranked second in school history with 435 career tackles, and to this day nobody in Cavalier history has more solo stops than his 295. He earned second-team All-ACC honors in 1994 and first-team recognition as a senior in 1996, playing in a Virginia linebacker corps alongside James Farrior that NFL scouts flocked to see. The knocks? He wasn’t a twitched-up pass-rush specialist, and some wondered if he’d be a “just a guy” in coverage. What he was, unmistakably, was instinctive, durable, smart (a psychology degree, no less) and relentless in pursuit — a sideline-to-sideline eraser. Oh, and the bloodlines didn’t hurt. His younger brother Darren, drafted that same spring by Green Bay, would go on to a borderline Hall of Fame career at safety.
A Raven Through and Through
Sharper stepped into the starting lineup almost immediately and never left. Over five seasons in Baltimore, he started all but one game — a stat that tells you everything about his reliability and his toughness. He piled up 328 tackles, 14 sacks, a pair of interceptions and a defensive touchdown in purple and black, manning the outside while Lewis patrolled the middle and Boulware hunted quarterbacks off the edge.
The crown jewel, of course, was the 2000 season. That defense — 165 points allowed, records shattered, souls taken — carried the franchise to Super Bowl XXXV, where the Ravens suffocated the Giants 34-7. New York managed a laughable 152 yards of total offense while Baltimore’s defense forced five turnovers. Sharper started that night in Tampa, lined up across from his old UVA practice sparring partner Tiki Barber, and helped make sure Barber and the Giants never got out of the parking lot. For a kid who lived through the lean 4-12 and 6-10 years of the late ’90s, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy was the sweetest kind of vindication.
The Expansion Exit
Here’s where the story turns bittersweet for Ravens fans. The salary cap purge following the 2001 season claimed plenty of casualties, and Sharper was left exposed in the 2002 expansion draft. The brand-new Houston Texans didn’t hesitate, making him the fifth overall selection.
Baltimore’s loss was Houston’s foundation. Freed to be the alpha of a young defense, Sharper turned into a tackling machine of historic proportions, leading the entire NFL in combined tackles in 2003 with 166 stops. Across three seasons with the Texans he was the franchise’s first defensive tone-setter. He signed with Seattle in 2005 and helped the Seahawks reach the first Super Bowl in their history before a knee injury ended his career. The final ledger: nine seasons, 136 games, 879 tackles, 25.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, and one gleaming championship ring. Before that final injury-shortened year, he had never missed a single game — 136 consecutive appearances. That’s Cal Ripken-like iron man stuff, relatively speaking.
The Second Act — And a Second Ring
So, what’s Jamie Sharper been up to? In a word: coaching. And doing it the hard way, the honest way — from the bottom up.
After dipping his toe in as a pro scouting intern with the Texans in 2013, Sharper took his first coaching job in 2016 as the linebackers coach at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. From there it was on to Georgetown University, where he coached linebackers and later the defensive line from 2018 through 2022 — and, because the man never stops working, picked up a master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown along the way.
In 2023, Sharper jumped to spring football with the XFL’s DC Defenders as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, reaching the championship game in his first season and winning the whole thing when the Defenders captured the UFL title in 2025. He even squeezed in a Bill Walsh coaching internship with the Eagles.
And now for the part that ought to make every member of the purple faithful smile. This past season, Sharper became the defensive coordinator of the UFL’s expansion Louisville Kings — hired by head coach Chris Redman. Yes, that Chris Redman. The staff reads like a 2000 Ravens reunion: Tony Banks coaching receivers, Chris McAlister coaching defensive backs, Brad Jackson coaching linebackers. Five men who shared a locker room in Owings Mills a quarter century ago.
All they did was start 0-3, rally to the playoffs, and beat Sharper’s old Defenders squad 27-20 in the United Bowl this past June — champions in the franchise’s very first season, with Sharper’s defense leading the way.
Twenty-five years after Tampa, Jamie Sharper is a champion again, once more surrounded by the guys he won it with the first time.
Some things never change.
The quiet ones just keep winning.
