Sophie Cunningham savagely booed during Indiana Fever game

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham returned to her old stomping ground on Thursday night. The Indiana Fever visited Mortgage Matchup Center for a road game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Cunningham, who was initially questionable to play due to a back injury, took the floor and logged a healthy 29 minutes off the bench. She finished with nine points on 2-of-7 shooting, two rebounds, two assists, a steal and one-three pointer.

The 6-foot-1 guard helped lead the Fever to a hard-fought 92-89 victory. It was a nice bounce-back win for Indiana following their lopsided loss to the Los Angeles Sparks the previous night.

The Fever improved to 13-9 after their latest victory.

Mercury fans boo former player Sophie Cunningham

Cunningham joined the Fever in 2025 as part of a blockbuster multi-team trade deal. Before she took her talents to Indiana, the former Missouri Tigers star spent her entire six-year WNBA career with the Mercury.

There’s no love lost between Cunningham and the Phoenix faithful, though. This is especially true after she was involved in a heated incident with Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner in one of their recent matchups. Cunningham also revealed on her podcast that, according to her source within the Mercury organization, “nobody likes”their roster this season.

On Thursday night, Phoenix supporters made their feelings about Cunningham very clear. They booed the 29-year-old savagely as she took a free throw.

It is important to note, however, that the crowd erupted into cheer after Cunningham sank the free throw. This just proves that there was a strong contingent of Fever fans inside the arena during the game. One could even argue that the cheers were louder than the boos.

Cunningham is now ready to move on, especially after their win. The Fever will be back in action on Sunday to close out their current four-game road stand. They will face the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces, with tipoff from T-Mobile Arena scheduled for 10:00 p.m. ET.
