Kyle Teel’s injury timeline justifies the White Sox’s trade deadline catcher move
A few weeks ago, Kyle Teel suffered a high ankle sprain while attempting to apply a tag at home plate. Given that it was already his third injury of the season, and with how much pain he appeared to be in afterwards, many feared the White Sox rookie’s year could be over.
The uncertainty surrounding Teel’s recovery, and poor performances of those at the position this year, ended up influencing general manager Chris Getz’s approach at the trade deadline. With Chicago’s remaining catching options providing little offensive production, adding help behind the plate became a clear priority. Getz ended up adding veteran Joey Bart, who is a former second overall selection by the San Francisco Giants in 2018.
In 2026 alone, Chicago will be the third organization for Bart. He began the campaign with the Pittsburgh Pirates, was dealt to the Atlanta Braves in June, and then most recently to the White Sox. Among fans, the move was viewed as a low-risk transaction, one that doesn’t look like an obvious solution to their problem, but certainly could pan out if the talented catcher finds lighting in a bottle with yet a new organization.
Amid all the trade deadline excitement, one important update may have flown under the radar. According to James Fegan, the White Sox believe Teel is roughly four weeks away from returning, putting him on track to return around September 1.
The Chicago White Sox are not only confident Kyle Teel will return in 2026, but he will continue to be their guy at catcher

There is little doubt that Teel remains the White Sox’s catcher of the future. However, after three separate injuries this season, the organization could have opted to shut him down and turn its attention to 2027. Instead, the White Sox reiterated their confidence that he will not only return before the end of the season, but they hinted that he will be their guy behind the plate.
Chris Getz said for Kyle Teel’s return to action:
“Sept. 1 is kind of a rough timeline. As we move along, further along from when the injury happened, we’ll get a better idea. He will be back this season. I think we’re confident in that, and that’s a big boost too.”
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) August 3, 2026
That perspective helps explain the modest acquisition of Joey Bart. Rather than replacing Teel, Bart gives Chicago a short-term option while Teel recovers, adding needed depth without altering the organization’s long-term plans. Additionally, Bart remains under team control after this season as well, meaning the two could continue to work together after this year.
For Teel, this injury-plagued season has undoubtedly been frustrating, but he can continue his rehabilitation knowing the organization still views him as a key piece of its playoff push. The White Sox have made it clear they expect him to reclaim the starting catcher role once he’s healthy, giving him the opportunity to return for the stretch run and, potentially, experience postseason baseball.
