Chicago Bears defense takes full blame for Week 5 Packers rout

Chicago Bears Jaylon Johnson

The Chicago Bears struggled to find their footing in all phases against the Green Bay Packers in Week 5, as evident by their 31-7. On the defensive side of the ball, clear mistakes were made.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love completed 25-of-31 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns. Four of those passes went for 40+ yards, which is the most the Bears have allowed in a game since 2020. Furthermore, while the Packers gained just 70 yards on the ground, running back MarShawn Lloyd found the end zone twice.

The Bears still rank ninth in total defense, allowing 311.4 yards per game. But this is now the second time Chicago has allowed 30+ points this season. And the Packers’ offense was able to hum without much pushback in Week 5.

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will have plenty to go over on tape entering Week 6. Chicago’s defense isn’t shying away from the criticism they know they’ll endure.

On the Packers’ first touchdown of the day, wide receiver Christian Watson got past the secondary for a 42-yard touchdown pass. Safety Xavier Woods was quick to put his hand up and admit fault on the play, via Kevin Fishbain of the Athletic.

“I have to stay on top of that,” Woods said. “I thought I had enough depth to be able to come down soon enough. But I just have to do my job and stay on top of that. That’s all on me.”

With another 53-yard touchdown pass to Watson later in the game and Love’s overall performance, Woods admits the Bears didn’t do enough. Chicago’s secondary knew they’d be in for a test. But they didn’t pass it this time around.

“They’re known for throwing the ball deep. We just really didn’t execute today,” Woods said. “We had too many lapses, and when you don’t execute, it leaves you (susceptible) to long balls.”

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson allowed four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown against the Packers, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. He kept things blunt after the game, acknowledging his play must improve moving forward.

“They do a really good job. I think we just didn’t; we didn’t execute,” Johnson said. “So, at some point you got to tip your hat, but we know what they were trying to do from the beginning, and we didn’t do a good enough job stopping them.”

As a captain, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett is trying to hold the unit together. He isn’t making any excuses for what went down in Week 5. But he’s hoping the Packers loss will be a wake up call rather than a death knell.
